Your Opportunity

The IOC (Integrated Operations Centre) will provide oversight to system flow and capacity. This team will monitor capacity and patient flow, but most importantly, it will take steps to remediate bottlenecks in the system. Working together, the Capacity Lead and EMS work together to assign location to EMS crews based on patient need, appropriateness and capacity issues.

This recent position will have a huge impact to patient flow and quality care through the Calgary Zone. Reporting to the Unit Manager of the IOC, the Assistant Head Nurse – Capacity Lead will: Work in collaboration with physicians, acute care site managers/flow coordinators, rural site managers, nurse clinicians, transition services and RAAPID, the successful applicant is responsible and accountable for providing direction leadership and organization around Calgary zone capacity management, in collaboration with EMS. Liaises with all acute care and rural sites to assist with input, throughput and output of patient care in the health system.

Actively monitors the patient flow through the system by working collaboratively with EMS supervisors, EMS crews, managers, nurse clinicians, physicians, transition services, and other appropriate members of the healthcare team, to synthesize the information available to identify bottlenecks in patient flow across the zone/sites/units and work to address and resolve them. Be responsible for the organization and leading IOC Capacity Huddles remotely. Be responsible for initiating escalation protocols when significant bottlenecks in patient flow are identified.

Description

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required,



you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers.

You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).

Current Basic Cardiac Life

Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications

Acute care clinical leadership experience with patient flow required (within one year).

Acute Care

Charge nurse experience required, within one year. Demonstrates understanding of patient flow and capacity management from a site/unit level. Demonstrates excellent communication skills and successful conflict management strategies.

Demonstrates excellent organizational skill and the ability to work under pressure. Demonstrates excellence in working collaboratively. Must be able to work independently. Must be able to organize and lead meetings/capacity huddles, providing direction and establishing a plan for the capacity demands.

Preferred Qualifications

Emergency Department Clinician/Charge Nurse Experience is preferred (within the last 6 months).
