AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE – 310S

ABOUT THE POSITION
We are looking for a motivated, reliable, and hardworking Automotive Service Technician Apprentice to join our automotive service team.
The successful candidate will work alongside licensed automotive technicians and gain hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance, inspection, diagnostics, mechanical repairs, electrical systems, and general automotive service.
This is an excellent opportunity for an apprentice who wants to develop their skills, complete their apprenticeship training, and build a long-term career in the automotive industry.
Applicants must be properly registered and authorized to work as an Automotive Service Technician Apprentice in Ontario, or be eligible to enter into a Registered Training Agreement with the appropriate apprenticeship authority.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The Automotive Service Technician Apprentice will assist with and progressively perform, under appropriate supervision and within the apprentice's authorized scope of work:
General Automotive Service & Maintenance
- Perform routine vehicle inspections and maintenance
- Perform oil and filter changes
- Check and service engine fluids and other vehicle fluid levels
- Inspect belts, hoses, filters, batteries, lights, and other vehicle components
- Perform preventative maintenance services
- Lubricate vehicle components as required
- Inspect vehicles for safety and mechanical concerns
- Identify worn, damaged, or defective components
- Assist licensed technicians with repairs and diagnosis
- Follow manufacturer service and repair procedures
Brakes
- Inspect brake systems and components
- Assist with brake diagnosis and repairs
- Replace brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, and related components as directed
- Inspect brake hydraulic systems
- Assist with brake fluid service
- Inspect parking brake systems
- Assist with brake system testing and troubleshooting
Tires, Wheels & Steering
- Remove and install wheels and tires
- Perform tire rotations
- Inspect tires for wear, damage, and safety concerns
- Mount and balance tires where trained and authorized
- Inspect wheels, wheel studs, lug nuts, and related components
- Inspect steering components
- Assist with steering system repairs
- Assist with wheel alignment inspections and adjustments under appropriate supervision
Suspension
- Inspect suspension components
- Assist with replacement of shocks and struts
- Inspect springs, control arms, bushings, ball joints, links, and related components
- Diagnose and repair suspension concerns under appropriate supervision
- Assist with suspension system testing
Engine & Mechanical Systems
- Assist with engine inspections, diagnosis, servicing, and repairs
- Assist with removal, adjustment, repair, and reassembly of engine components
- Inspect and service cooling systems
- Inspect radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, and related components
- Assist with engine performance diagnosis
- Assist with timing, drive belt, and related repairs
- Assist with transmission and drivetrain servicing and repairs
- Inspect and service clutches, drive shafts, axles, differentials, and related components as applicable
- Assist with mechanical troubleshooting and repairs
Electrical & Electronic Systems
- Perform basic electrical system inspections and testing
- Diagnose electrical concerns with supervision
- Test batteries and charging systems
- Assist with starter and alternator diagnosis and replacement
- Inspect wiring, connectors, fuses, relays, and electrical components
- Assist with ignition system diagnosis and repairs
- Use appropriate electrical testing equipment
- Use automotive diagnostic scan tools
- Assist with diagnosis of electronic vehicle systems and components
Ontario's Automotive Service Technician scope specifically includes diagnosis and repair of ignition, charging and starting systems, wiring, instruments, and other electrical/electronic systems. Fuel, Engine Management & Emissions
- Assist with diagnosing engine performance concerns
- Inspect fuel and engine management systems
- Assist with diagnostic testing using scan tools
- Diagnose and repair applicable emission-control system concerns under supervision
- Assist with fuel system service and repairs
- Inspect sensors and electronic engine-management components
- Assist with troubleshooting check-engine-light concerns
Heating & Air Conditioning
- Inspect vehicle heating and ventilation systems
- Assist with diagnosis of heating and air-conditioning concerns
- Inspect HVAC components
- Assist with HVAC repairs and maintenance when properly trained and authorized
- Follow applicable environmental and safety procedures when handling refrigerants
The Ontario scope of practice includes diagnosing, installing, inspecting, maintaining and removing applicable vehicle air-conditioning, refrigeration and heating systems.
Diagnostics
- Perform visual and mechanical inspections
- Use diagnostic scan tools and testing equipment
- Retrieve and interpret diagnostic trouble codes with supervision
- Perform basic diagnostic tests
- Follow diagnostic procedures and manufacturer specifications
- Identify potential causes of vehicle problems
- Report findings accurately to the supervising technician
- Assist in determining appropriate repair procedures
Shop & Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all workplace health and safety requirements
- Follow shop safety procedures at all times
- Properly use lifts, jacks, hoists, tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery
- Use required personal protective equipment
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Properly handle automotive fluids, batteries, tires, parts, and waste materials
- Follow proper procedures for hazardous materials and shop chemicals
- Keep tools and equipment clean and properly maintained
- Assist with general shop duties as required
- Maintain professional and respectful relationships with coworkers, technicians, service advisors, and customers
QUALIFICATIONSRequired
- Currently registered as an Automotive Service Technician Apprentice (310S) in Ontario, or eligible and willing to register
- Valid Registered Training Agreement (RTA) where required for apprenticeship work
- Genuine interest in pursuing a career as a licensed Automotive Service Technician
- Basic understanding of automotive mechanical systems
- Ability to follow instructions and learn from licensed technicians
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Good problem-solving skills
- Reliable and punctual
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work safely in a busy automotive shop
- Ability to work independently when assigned tasks and as part of a team
- Valid Ontario driver's licence is an asset/required depending on job duties and insurance requirements
Previous Experience Previous experience in an automotive repair shop, dealership, quick-service facility, tire shop, or automotive service environment is strongly preferred.
Experience with any of the following is an asset:
- Oil changes and preventative maintenance
- Tire installation and balancing
- Brake service
- Suspension repairs
- Basic mechanical repairs

APPRENTICESHIP DEVELOPMENT The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and mentorship from experienced automotive technicians.

IMPORTANT ONTARIO APPRENTICESHIP REQUIREMENT Automotive Service Technician is a compulsory trade in Ontario. Individuals performing work within the compulsory trade must be appropriately authorized. An apprentice must be working pursuant to a valid Registered Training Agreement, unless an applicable exemption applies. Employers are also responsible for ensuring workers performing compulsory-trade work are properly authorized.
