Barndominium Designer
Barndo & Co.
Help design homes people have been dreaming about for years.
Barndo & Co. is growing, and we’re looking for a talented Barndominium Designer to join our Plan & Design team.
If you love floor plans, residential design, architecture, interiors, and figuring out how to make a home look great, flow properly, and actually work for the people living in it, this could be a pretty exciting job.
You’ll be helping design custom barndominiums for families across a wide range of styles, sizes, properties and lifestyles.
No two projects are exactly the same.
One day you may be working on a compact country home. The next could be a large family barndominium, a multigenerational home, a shop-house, an acreage property or something completely custom.
Your job is to help take an idea and turn it into a home someone can actually build.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll start by working directly alongside our Plan & Design Manager, helping develop, revise and refine residential floor plans for Barndo & Co. clients.
You’ll be involved in the actual design work every day.
That includes
- Creating and revising custom 2D barndominium floor plans.
- Taking client ideas, sketches, inspiration photos, existing plans and design notes and translating them into thoughtful residential layouts.
- Working closely with the Plan & Design Manager to develop designs based on each client’s lifestyle, priorities and vision.
- Thinking critically about room sizing, circulation, sightlines, storage, entrances, entertaining spaces, privacy, family functionality and overall flow.
- Finding smarter ways to use space and improve layouts.
- Exploring different design solutions when a layout isn’t quite working.
- Completing revisions based on direction from the Plan & Design Manager and client feedback.
- Collaborating with the rest of the Barndo & Co. Plan & Design team.
- Managing multiple active home designs at different stages of development.
- Keeping drawings, revisions, files and project information organized within the Barndo & Co. technology stack.
- Following our established design standards, workflows and quality-control processes.
- Preparing completed designs properly for the next stages of the Barndo & Co. process.
Grow Into More You will not be expected to walk in on day one and immediately manage clients on your own.
You’ll begin by working closely with the Plan & Design Manager, learning how Barndo & Co. approaches residential design, how we communicate with clients, and how our projects move through the design process.
As you become more experienced and confident in the role, there will be opportunities to become increasingly involved with clients.
For the right person, that could eventually mean participating in design meetings, presenting ideas, discussing revisions directly with homeowners and taking on more ownership of individual Plan & Design projects.
We want someone who can grow with the department.
Who We’re Looking For
We are not simply looking for someone who knows how to use drafting software.
We want someone who understands homes.
Someone who can look at a floor plan and start thinking:
“Why is this hallway here?”
“Could this room work better?”
“Where are these people going to put their stuff?”
“How does someone actually move through this house every day?”
“Can we make this layout better?”
You may come from
- Residential design
- Architectural technology
- Drafting
- Interior design
- Space planning
- Custom home design
- Residential construction
- Or another related design background
The right person will be someone who:
- Genuinely loves designing homes.
- Has a strong understanding of residential floor plans and space planning.
- Can visualize how people will actually live within a space.
- Has a good eye for proportion, layout and functionality.
- Enjoys solving design problems.
- Pays very close attention to details.
- Can take direction and turn feedback into better designs.
- Is comfortable making multiple revisions to get a plan right.
- Can manage several projects without losing track of the details.
- Is organized,
accountable and dependable.
- Communicates clearly.
- Works well as part of a collaborative design team.
- Is comfortable learning new technology and software.
- Wants to continue improving as a residential designer.
Experience with RoomSketcher is an asset, but it is not required. Experience with CAD, residential floor-plan software, architectural drafting programs, interior-design software or comparable tools is absolutely valuable.
Why Barndo & Co.?
Because you’ll actually get to design homes.
You won’t be drawing the same subdivision plan hundreds of times.
Our clients come to Barndo & Co. because they want something different, and that creates some incredibly interesting design projects.
You’ll get exposure to a huge variety of homes and design challenges while working directly alongside an experienced Plan & Design team.
You’ll also be joining Barndo & Co. during a period of significant growth, which means there is real opportunity for your role to grow as the company and department continue to expand.
If you're the type of person who can spend hours looking at floor plans, moving walls around in your head and thinking about how you would make a house better...
We want to talk to you.
