About Next Up Studios
Next Up Studios is the sports media division of Next Up Hoops, an Edmonton-based competitive basketball organization.
We're building a different kind of sports media presence. We don't just want highlights from games. We want to capture everything that makes basketball culture what it is: the competition, personalities, road trips, practices, bench reactions, conversations, celebrations, setbacks, and moments that happen when the game isn't being played.
Our goal is to create content that makes people feel like they're part of the team and community.
The Role
We're looking for a Basketball Videographer & Content Producer who genuinely understands and loves basketball.
This is not a general marketing or social media position.
We're looking for someone who follows basketball, understands basketball culture, knows what players and fans actually want to watch, and can recognize a great moment without needing someone to point it out.
You'll be embedded around our teams at games, practices, tournaments, tryouts, events, and occasionally travel. You'll capture everything from high-level basketball footage to behind-the-scenes moments and then turn that footage into engaging short-form and long-form content.
You need to be comfortable both shooting AND editing.
One day you might be filming a player hitting a game-winning three. Another day you might be following the team through an entire tournament weekend and turning it into a vlog.
We need someone capable of both.
What You'll Create
Basketball & Highlight Content
- Film games, practices, tournaments, tryouts, and other basketball events
- Capture highlights, individual plays, player mixtapes, warmups, celebrations, bench reactions, and atmosphere
- Understand basketball well enough to anticipate where the action and story will be
- Turn raw footage into polished Reels, TikToks, highlights, hype videos, and other short-form content
- Select music, pacing, cuts, and moments that fit current basketball and sports media culture
Behind-the-Scenes & Vlog Content A major part of this role is capturing what happens outside the highlights.
You'll be expected to
- Follow teams throughout games and tournament weekends
- Capture interactions between players and coaches
- Film pre-game and post-game moments
- Capture bench reactions and celebrations
- Film practices, team activities, travel, hotels, meals, downtime, and other off-court moments
- Be comfortable interacting with players and coaches on camera
- Help bring out personalities rather than simply standing behind the camera
- Recognize funny, emotional, competitive, or interesting moments as they're happening
- Turn that footage into entertaining vlog-style and behind-the-scenes content
We want people watching our content to feel like they're getting access to a side of grassroots basketball they normally don't see. Editing & Storytelling
You'll also edit much of the content you capture, including:
- Instagram Reels and TikToks
- Game and player highlights
- Basketball mixtapes
- Hype videos
- Promotional videos
- Behind-the-scenes videos
- Tournament and travel recaps
- Longer-form vlog-style content
We're not looking for someone who simply puts clips together. We're looking for someone who understands pacing, music, hooks, storytelling, emotion, and retention and can turn raw footage into something basketball players and fans actually want to watch.
Who We're Looking For
Basketball knowledge matters for this role.
The ideal candidate is someone who watches basketball, follows basketball content online, understands basketball culture, and enjoys being around the game.
You should
- Have experience shooting and editing video
- Have a strong understanding of basketball
- Regularly consume basketball or sports content yourself
- Understand what makes sports content engaging on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube
- Be comfortable filming live basketball
- Be comfortable shooting both cinematic footage and spontaneous handheld/vlog-style content
- Know how to edit both short-form and longer-form video
- Have enough personality to interact naturally with players, coaches, and staff
- Be comfortable being around a team rather than simply filming from the sidelines
- Be able to recognize moments worth capturing without constantly being directed
- Be creative and willing to pitch content ideas
- Be reliable and able to work evenings and weekends when games and tournaments take place
- Have reliable transportation within Edmonton and surrounding areas
- Be willing to travel occasionally for tournaments and events
This role is especially suited to someone who already finds themselves watching basketball mixtapes, sports Reels, team vlogs, mic'd-up content, tournament recaps, and behind-the-scenes sports content.
Equipment
Having your own camera and equipment is an asset.
Please let us know what equipment you currently shoot with when applying.
Candidates with professional equipment, strong experience, and the ability to operate independently may be considered toward the higher end of the pay range.
Schedule & Travel
This is a permanent part time position with hours primarily based around our basketball schedule.
Expect a mix of weeknight practices and events, weekend games, tournaments, tryouts, special events, and occasional travel.
Some tournaments may require travel within Alberta, elsewhere in Canada, or occasionally the United States. When travel is required by Next Up Studios, approved travel and accommodation expenses will be covered.
Compensation
$18.00–$25.00 per hour based on experience, portfolio, equipment, and ability to independently shoot and edit content.
There is potential for the role and compensation to grow as Next Up Studios expands.
How to Apply
Apply directly through Indeed and include a link to your portfolio, Instagram/TikTok page, YouTube channel, showreel, or previous video work.
A portfolio or previous work sample is required. Applications without work samples will not be moved forward.
Sports and basketball work is strongly preferred, but if your portfolio demonstrates the shooting, editing, storytelling, and personality we're looking for, we'd still like to see it.
Pay: $18.00-$25.00 per hour
Application question(s)
- Please provide a link to your portfolio, Instagram page, showreel, or any previous work samples. Applicants who do not include a portfolio link or work samples will not be moved forward in the hiring process.
