The University of Greater Manchester is a distinctive, teaching-intensive university with a long history of widening access to education and a solid commitment to its students, its local communities and the wider Greater Manchester region. With roots stretching back to 1825, the University today has a global student community of around 11,000 and employs more than 900 people. It has developed a strong reputation for student-focused education, characterised by small teaching groups, professionally relevant programmes and close links with employers and industry.

Recent investment includes the Greater Manchester Business School, the National Centre for Motorsport Engineering and the £40 million Institute of Medical Sciences, which is home to the University’s new Medical School. The University also sits at the heart of a distinctive wider Group spanning higher and further education, apprenticeships, schools and outdoor learning.

The University is now seeking to make a number of new appointments to its Board of Governors as part of a wider programme of renewal and strengthening. The appointments come at an important point in the University’s development: it expects to undertake a comprehensive review of its institutional strategy during the 2026/27 academic year, while also implementing the revised CUC Higher Education Code of Governance and undertaking an externally supported review of the Board.

New Governors will therefore have an important opportunity to contribute to the University’s strategic direction, provide constructive challenge and oversight, and help ensure its long-term academic and financial sustainability.

The University is particularly interested in individuals who can bring senior-level expertise in one or more of the following areas: finance and accountancy; audit and risk; legal and regulatory matters; and higher or further education. Candidates will bring sound judgement, an understanding of effective governance and the ability to contribute constructively to high-level decision-making within a complex organisation. They will share the University’s commitment to the purpose and value of higher education, including its role in widening access and equality of opportunity, and will be willing to engage actively in the life of the University and act as an ambassador through their professional and wider networks.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the University of Greater Manchester on these appointments. For further information about the roles, including details of how to apply, please visit our website via the button below using reference ICARA. The closing date for applications is noon on Wednesday 2nd September 2026.
