JH Building Materials Ltd., operating as JH Railing, designs, supplies and installs custom aluminum and glass railing systems for decks, balconies, stairs, pool enclosures and sunrooms throughout Manitoba. We are a small, hands-on shop, and we are looking for a CAD Drafting Technician to prepare the shop and fabrication drawings that our production and installation work runs on.

This is a permanent, full time position of 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The wage is $32.00 per hour, paid bi-weekly, with two weeks of paid vacation per calendar year. The language of work is English. The work location is 8386 Wilkes Avenue, Headingley, Manitoba R4H 1B8. One position is available and the start date is as soon as possible. This position falls under NOC 22212, Drafting technologists and technicians.

Because we are a small company, the person in this role owns a project's drawings from first measurement through to fabrication and installation, rather than drafting to someone else's specification.

Responsibilities

- Develop detailed CAD drawings for aluminum railings, glass railings, sunrooms and related components from project specifications, design criteria and customer requirements
- Produce fabrication drawings that show design intent, dimensions, material specifications and installation methods clearly enough for the shop to build from directly
- Create 3D models and assembly drawings of the finished product
- Attend customer sites to take field measurements and confirm dimensions and site conditions before fabrication
- Prepare as built drawings and design modifications based on those field measurements




- Work directly with the owner to confirm project requirements, priorities and delivery dates
- Coordinate with the installation crew so that drawings are practical and match actual site conditions
- Deal with customers and general contractors on drawing revisions and approvals
- Prepare drawings and material take offs that support customer quotes and proposals
- Check that designs meet the applicable building code guard and railing requirements, safety standards and client specifications before drawings are released
- Review and verify all drawings for accuracy before release to fabrication or installation
- Update and revise drawings based on feedback from the shop or from site

Qualifications

- Completion of a college diploma or certificate in drafting technology, mechanical or architectural drafting, civil or architectural engineering technology, or a related field
- Two years or more of CAD drafting experience
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D production drawings
- Able to produce dimensioned drawings with material specifications that a fabrication shop can build from without further interpretation
- Able to take accurate field measurements at customer sites and convert them into as built drawings
- Able to read and apply building code requirements for guards and railings
- Able to communicate in English with the shop, installers and customers
