Casual/On Call/Relief Early Childhood Educator (ECE)Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and implement age-appropriate, play-based and emergent curriculum that builds on children’s interests, curiosity, exploration, creativity, and problem-solving.
- Provide engaging learning experiences that support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, language, creative, and physical development.
- Create a safe, welcoming, inclusive, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children feel a sense of belonging and are excited to participate each day.
- Actively supervise and engage with children during classroom activities, free play, meals, rest periods, transitions, outdoor play, field trips, and recreational activities.
- Encourage children to develop independence, confidence, positive relationships, self-regulation, and age-appropriate problem-solving skills.
- Observe children regularly and document their interests, learning, developmental progress, milestones, and emerging needs.
- Use observations to support future programming and create meaningful learning experiences based on the needs and interests of the children.
- Support children with diverse abilities, additional needs, or disabilities by adapting activities and providing individualized support within an inclusive group environment.
- Work collaboratively with other educators, supervisors, directors, families, and community professionals to support each child’s development and well-being.
- Build respectful and positive relationships with children and model appropriate language, behaviour, kindness, and social interactions.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents/guardians regarding their child’s daily experiences, progress, achievements, routines, and any concerns.
- Encourage meaningful family involvement and partnerships within the child care program.
- Promptly report concerns regarding a child’s health, safety, development, behaviour, or well-being to the Director/Supervisor and complete required documentation.
- Complete daily reports, observations, incident reports, programming documentation, attendance records, and other required records accurately and on time.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, employees, and organizational information.
- Maintain a clean, organized, inviting, and developmentally appropriate classroom that encourages children to explore and learn independently.
- Perform general cleaning and sanitization duties, including maintaining toys, learning materials, furniture, eating areas, sleeping areas, washrooms/change areas, and other child care spaces as required.
- Follow appropriate health, hygiene, diapering/toileting, food-handling, illness prevention, and infection-control procedures.
- Ensure classrooms and play areas remain free from unnecessary clutter, debris, and potential safety hazards.
- Follow all applicable requirements under Alberta's Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulation, as well as the centre's policies and procedures.
- Maintain appropriate supervision and child-to-educator ratios and immediately communicate any safety, staffing, or ratio concerns to the Director/Supervisor.
- Follow emergency procedures, health and safety requirements, and established protocols for accidents, incidents, injuries, illnesses, and emergencies.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, training, coaching, and ongoing learning opportunities.
- Work cooperatively as part of the centre team, support colleagues when required, and contribute to a respectful and positive workplace environment.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to work with different age groups and classrooms based on the operational needs of the centre.
- Assist with classroom transitions, room coverage, opening/closing responsibilities, and other reasonable duties assigned by the Director or management.
- Use computers, tablets, child care applications, or other technology as required for programming, documentation, record keeping, and communication.

- Basic computer skills for documentation, programming, record keeping, and communication.
- Ability and willingness to receive feedback, participate in coaching, and continuously improve professional practice.
- Physically able to actively participate in children's programming, including standing, walking, sitting on the floor, crouching, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and frequent use of hands.
- Ability to lift and carry approximately 25 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally, where required to safely perform job duties.
Qualifications
- Alberta Early Childhood Educator Certification – Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3, or eligibility to obtain the required certification.
- Previous experience working in a licensed child care, preschool, early learning, or similar setting is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting children with additional or diverse needs is considered an asset.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification appropriate for a child care environment, or willingness to obtain it before commencing employment.
- A satisfactory Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, meeting the centre's and licensing requirements.
- Fluent verbal, reading, and written English communication skills.
- Commitment to ongoing career development and maintaining current knowledge of early childhood education practices.
- Knowledge of Alberta child care licensing requirements and applicable health and safety standards is considered an asset.
Professional Expectations The successful educator will be dependable, respectful, flexible, collaborative, and child-focused. They are expected to actively participate in the daily operation of the classroom rather than simply supervise from a distance. Educators should engage with children at their level, observe their interests, extend their learning through meaningful experiences, and contribute positively to the overall quality of the program.
