Job Summary The Chef Supervisor plays a key role in our senior living community by providing residents with nutritious, high-quality meals that support health, wellness, and enjoyment. As a member of the leadership team, this position oversees food service operations, including menu planning, meal preparation, inventory control, budgeting, quality assurance, and staff supervision.
The Chef
Supervisor promotes culinary excellence, resident-centered service, and compliance with all food safety and regulatory standards.
Qualifications
· Valid Red Seal Chef Certification
· Culinary diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience considered an asset
· Minimum 3-5 years of progressive culinary leadership experience, preferably in retirement living, long term care, or healthcare service settings
· Demonstrated experience supervising and developing kitchen teams
· Current Food Handler Certification Required
· Strong Knowledge of food safety regulations, sanitation standards, and infection prevention practises
· Experience with menu planning, dietary modifications, therapeutic diets, and allergen management
· Knowledge of budgeting, inventory control, purchasing, and food cost management
· Ability to prepare high-quality meals while maintaining consistency, efficiency, and presentation standards
· Robust organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with residents, families, and team members
· Proficiency with computer systems and food service software considered an asset
· Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as operationally required
· Satisfactory vulnerable sector check and ability to meet all legislative and organizational requirements for employment in a retirement living environment
Tasks and Responsibilities
Culinary Leadership & Food Preparation
· Plan, prepare and oversee the production of nutritious, high-quality meals and snacks
· Ensure all menu items are prepared and presented according to established standards
· Monitor staff and preparation of food quality, taste, portion control, and presentation
· Develop seasonal and special event menus that enhance dining experience
· Accommodate dietary restrictions, allergies, and therapeutic diets as prescribed
· Maintains administrative responsibility for culinary documentation,
including regulatory compliance records, nutrition and dietary tracking, production schedules, and quality assurance
· Provides leadership and coordination of culinary operations through staff scheduling, training, performance monitoring, and collaboration with department managers to ensure excellence and resident satisfaction
Resident Experience & Hospitality
· Promote a resident-centred dining experience that supports resident satisfaction and quality of life
· Engage with residents to gather feedback and identify opportunities for menu enhancements and dining experiences
· Respond to resident and family concerns related to food and dining services in a timely and qualified manner
· Support special events, celebrations, and community functions through exceptional culinary service
Kitchen/Dining Operations
· Provides operational oversight of both culinary and dining room services, ensuring seamless coordination between food production and front-of-house service teams.
· Oversees dining room operations, service standards, and resident dining experiences, ensuring a high level of hospitality, satisfaction, and quality service delivery.
· Monitors resident dining satisfaction, analyzes service trends, and implements improvement initiatives to enhance the resident experience
· Assists with the planning and execution of special functions, resident events, and hospitality programs, including budgeting, staffing, and service coordination.
· Develop production schedules and coordinate meal service activities
· Ensure adequate staffing levels and effective task delegation
· Monitor equipment performance and coordinate maintenance as required
Team Leadership & Staff Development
· Supervise, mentor and support dietary and kitchen team members
· Participate in recruitment, onboarding, training, coaching, and performance management
· Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative workplace culture
· Ensure staff adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and safety standards
· Oversee Dietary Aides in overall service, and food/dining experiences
Menu Planning & Nutrition
· Collaborate with dietary professionals and leadership to develop balanced and appealing menus
· Foster and promote scratch cooking: Prioritize fresh, locally sourced ingredients over pre-packaged,
high sodium systemic foods to elevate food quality
· Ensure compliance with resident dietary needs, nutritional standards, and legislative requirements
· Evaluate menu performance and recommend improvements based on resident feedback and operational needs
· Oversees menu planning, recipe standardization, food cost analysis, inventory management, and procurement processes to support operational and budgetary objectives in Hospitality Manager’s absence
Financial & Inventory Management
· Manage food and supply inventories to maintain adequate stock levels
· Participate in purchasing activities and vendor relationship management
· Monitor food, labour, and supply costs to ensure budget compliance
· Implement strategies to reduce waste and maximize operational efficiency
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
· Maintain compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and public health regulations
· Conduct routine audits and inspections to ensure kitchen cleanliness and safety
· Ensure accurate completion of required documentation and records
· Participate in quality improvement initiatives and regulatory inspections
Health and Safety
· Promote a safe working environment and ensure adherence to occupational health and safety requirements
· Monitor safe food handling practices and infection prevention protocols
· Report and address workplace hazards, incidents, and equipment concerns promptly
· Support emergency preparedness and response procedures as required
· Uphold and promote the values and philosophy Senior Living of Dalron
· Complete all other tasks as assigned.
Dress Requirements
· Prescribed chef uniform, slip-resistant shoes, suitable for a commercial kitchen
Working Conditions
· Flexibility in hours worked; evenings and weekends may be required.
· Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
· Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of food products, equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs)
· Exposure to hot surfaces, kitchen equipment, cleaning chemicals, and varying temperatures, including refrigerators and freezers
