Toronto Beach Chorale
Toronto Beach Chorale is an auditioned volunteer choir based in the Beaches area in the east of Toronto. The choir is led by its founder Mervin W. Fick and performs three concerts each season from September to May, with classical choral works from the Baroque to contemporary,
As we strengthen how we support our members, Artistic Director, board, and community, we are seeking a part-time General Manager to bring coordination, structure, and follow-through to our volunteer-driven organization.
About the Role The General Manager works with our committees, board, and Artistic Director to keep the choir's operations running smoothly and to help our volunteer structure work as well as it can. This is not a role where one person owns every function of the organization.
Toronto Beach
Chorale runs on active committees — Production, Promotions & Publicity, Chorister Recruitment & Development, Community Outreach, and Financial Sustainability — each of which owns decisions and content within its own area. The GM's core value is coordination: making sure the right people are doing the right things, on time, with the support they need, and that nothing falls through the cracks between committees.
The role reports to the Board and works in close coordination with the Artistic Director. Alongside this coordination role, the GM also carries out a number of specific operational, communications, and fundraising-support tasks, detailed below.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Coordination
- Coordinate the audition process, concentrated primarily in late August and the first three rehearsals of September, with a much lighter touch for January auditions
- Maintain and oversee the annual operational calendar
- Serve as the central point of contact for choristers on scheduling — rehearsals, dress rehearsals, concerts, training sessions, and community events — so members always know where they need to be and when
- Maintain a member list showing who leads or supports each committee, ensuring every chorister has a meaningful volunteer role
- Ensure each committee has a lead, and support that lead in being effective — helping define committee goals and make good use of their volunteers
- Work with committee leads on an ongoing basis to identify volunteer gaps and help recruit people to fill them
- Check in periodically with committee volunteers to ensure they feel positive about how their role is going, and help address it where it isn't
- For committees without a board member, gather updates from the committee and report on their behalf at board meetings
- Coordinate implementation of specific strategic plan items,
as defined by the board (year 1 scope to be confirmed once the year-1 operational plan is finalized)
Chorister Communications
- Own the content and timing of chorister-facing communications: rehearsal and venue changes, fee reminders, event logistics, and other information choristers need to attend the right place at the right time
- Act as the point of contact for committee and board members requesting a chorister communication, and use judgment to ensure requests align with the choir's mandate and standards
- Provide finalized content to the volunteer responsible for distributing chorister emails
Committee Support
- Work with Chorister Recruitment & Development on audition coordination and the password-protected member section of the website
- Work with Promotions & Publicity on ticket and concert information on the public website, and general site look and feel; audience-facing marketing remains owned by this committee
- Work with Financial Sustainability (see below) on strategy and select execution tasks
- Route website change requests from committee owners to our website developer and confirm changes are completed
- Work with the Production lead to ensure production documentation stays accurate and usable, and support tasks that are a common barrier for volunteers, such as contacting suppliers (risers, equipment rentals) or coordinating with professional musicians. Day-of logistics remain owned by Production
Board Support & Organizational Continuity
- Attend 6–8 board meetings per year and prepare monthly written reports on activities and operational updates
- Contribute documentation, checklists, and repeatable processes that support continuity, particularly for roles that have historically been hard to fill or pass on
- Share information transparently with the board, Artistic Director, and committees, and support open communication across the organization
Financial Sustainability The board is committed to rebuilding an active Financial Sustainability committee this year. The GM's role is to help ensure that committee's success, not to carry its workload alone:
- Contribute fundraising expertise and help the committee define its strategy and priorities early in the season
- Help recruit and coach committee members, including supporting those less comfortable with direct donor asks,
so the committee's work doesn't depend on a small number of confident volunteers
- Coordinate a donor drive kick-off with the committee
- Support the pursuit of at least one corporate or major sponsor
- Support grant applications in partnership with the committee
Time Commitment and Work Pattern This is a part-time role with a fluctuating seasonal workload:
- Busiest periods: late August through September (auditions, recruitment), and in the lead-up to each concert (December, February, April)
- Lighter periods: January auditions require minimal time; mid-season stretches between concerts are generally quieter
- In-person attendance is expected at concerts and during the first several rehearsals of each term
- Some work can be done remotely; communications, coordination, and reporting tasks are ongoing but versatile in timing
Compensation Annual compensation range: $6,000–$8,500 CAD, depending on the candidate. The board recognizes this is a modest starting rate for the role's responsibilities, and is committed to revisiting compensation as the choir's revenue base grows, including through the fundraising work this role supports.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We're looking for someone who:
- Is highly organized and reliable, with strong follow-through on multiple concurrent tasks
- Enjoys coordinating people and projects, and is comfortable working through others rather than doing everything personally
- Can exercise judgment — knowing what needs a decision, what needs escalation to the board, and what to filter out
- Is comfortable communicating with a wide range of people, including some direct fundraising conversations
- Fundraising or development experience is a strong asset, though not required
- Is aligned with working in a volunteer-driven, board-led, community-minded organization, and values shared decision-making and transparency
Term and Continuity We welcome candidates interested in contributing for one or more seasons. Building documentation and systems that support continuity — regardless of tenure — is an important part of the role.
This is a contractor position for a one-year term. As such the contractor is responsible for Canada Revenue Agency payments such as CPP, EI, and income tax. Renewal is subject to a joint discussion on performance and fit.
Job Type: Casual
Pay: $6,000.00-$8,500.00 per year
Flexible language requirement
- French not required
Application Question(s):
- Are you aware that this is a fully volunteer position and that no matter what, you will not be paid for this role?
