Civil/Structural Designer (Part-Time, Contractor), Calgary, Alberta The Civil/Structural Designer is responsible for the design, modeling and checking of all civil/structural deliverables. This includes developing initial layouts, overseeing revisions of existing computer aided design files, and creating and manipulating drawings from conceptual markups or verbal instructions to meet project requirements. Our ideal candidate will have excellent modeling skills.
This part-time contractor position is based in Calgary, Alberta with part-time hours worked in the office Monday through Thursday. The position is anticipated to transition to full-time in the future.
Key Responsibilities
· Creates, manipulates and/or modifies advanced and detailed drawings within the area of specialization using AutoCAD and modeling software to develop detailed 2D & 3D designs.
· Assists in development of design criteria, coordinates design with various disciplines, applies basic engineering concepts, engineering calculations and efficient discipline specific layout of equipment to support high quality design packages.
· Assists Engineering with layout studies, MTO’s and developing scope of work for civil/structural design and drafting activities.
· Researches and evaluates technical data and communicates with manufacturers, clients and other engineers as necessary to complete the assigned design task.
· Identifies impact of changes on other disciplines and communicates design changes.
· Conducts preliminary QA/QC and checking.
· Maintains drawing and standard files in accordance with Company and Client standards.
· Assumes responsibility for continuity and consistency between conceptual designs and detail designs.
· Utilizes existing Company drawing standards and aids with the creation of new standards.
· Responsible for the technical adequacy, quality of the work,
consistency, integrity and adherence to schedule required for the assigned task or project.
· May have some client interface in with providing or acquiring information.
Qualifications and Attributes
· Degree/Diploma in Drafting, Civil/Structural Engineering Technology or other relevant program and/or a combination of related technical courses and work experience.
· Minimum 2 years’ previous exposure to pipeline and pipeline facility work.
· 10+ years’ experience directly related to Civil/Structural drafting, design and modeling work.
· Excellent computer skills and extensive knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD Civil 3D), CadWorx modeling software, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Navisworks.
· Solid track record in designing civil/structural projects of various complexity and scope.
· Strong working knowledge of discipline specific codes, standards and best practices (e.g., AISC steel manual, UBC requirements).
· Work experience within an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) environment is essential.
· Effective and proven organizational skills to meet multiple deadlines and handle multiple tasks in a high pressure and demanding work environment. Ability to organize and prioritize project work.
· Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Demonstrates a willingness to learn current techniques and software.
· Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
