Class 1 Driver – Job DescriptionPosition Title
Class 1 Commercial Truck Driver
Location
Alberta, Canada
Position Summary
We are seeking a reliable, safety-focused, and skilled Class 1 Driver to operate a variety of commercial trucks and trailers, including gravel trucks, tri-dump trailers, end dumps, tandem trucks, quad trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, step decks, and other heavy commercial equipment.
The driver will be responsible for safely transporting gravel, aggregate, construction materials, equipment, and other freight throughout Alberta. The successful candidate must be committed to safe driving practices, proper load securement, vehicle inspections, accurate documentation, and compliance with all applicable Alberta and federal transportation regulations.
Equipment Operated The successful candidate may be required to operate:
- Class 1 tractor-trailer combinations
- Gravel trucks
- Tandem trucks
- Quad trucks
- Tri-drive trucks
- Tri-dump trailers
- End dump trailers
- Step deck trailers
- Flat deck trailers
- Other heavy-haul and commercial transportation equipment as required
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate gravel trucks, tandem and quad trucks, tri-dump trailers, end dumps, tractor-trailers, step decks, and other commercial equipment.
- Transport gravel, aggregate, soil, construction materials, equipment, and general freight.
- Complete thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
- Inspect tires, brakes, lights, coupling systems, hydraulic systems, dump boxes, trailers, and other equipment.
- Safely load, unload, dump, tarp, chain, strap, and secure cargo as required.
- Ensure loads are properly distributed and within allowable weight and dimensional limits.
- Safely operate dump equipment and ensure the dumping area is suitable before raising the box or trailer.
- Follow all applicable Alberta and federal transportation regulations.
- Maintain required daily logs, trip records,
delivery tickets, inspection reports, and other documentation.
- Communicate professionally with dispatch, customers, site supervisors, and other drivers.
- Follow assigned routes and delivery schedules.
- Work safely around construction sites, gravel pits, aggregate facilities, and other industrial locations.
- Report mechanical issues, equipment defects, accidents, cargo damage, and safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of assigned equipment.
- Perform minor repairs or adjustments when qualified to do so.
- Operate safely in all weather and road conditions, including Alberta winter conditions.
- Follow company health, safety, and environmental policies at all times.
Qualifications
- Valid Alberta Class 1 Driver's Licence.
- Valid Q Air Brake Endorsement, where required.
- Clean and acceptable driver's abstract.
- Previous experience operating gravel trucks, tandems, quads, tri-dumps, end dumps, or tractor-trailers is preferred.
- Experience hauling gravel, aggregate, construction materials, or other heavy loads is an asset.
- Knowledge of load securement and commercial vehicle safety requirements.
- Ability to safely perform vehicle inspections and identify mechanical or safety issues.
- Ability to work independently and follow dispatch instructions.
- Good communication and time-management skills.
- Physically capable of performing duties associated with inspections, tarping, chaining, securing loads, and general truck maintenance.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings,
evenings, weekends, and extended shifts when required.
Additional Experience Considered an Asset
- Gravel and aggregate hauling
- Construction site hauling
- End dump and tri-dump operation
- Tandem and quad truck operation
- Step deck and flat deck hauling
- Tarping and load securement
- Experience with chains, binders, straps, and tarps
- Experience operating around gravel pits, construction sites, and industrial facilities
- TDG certification, where required
- Experience with overweight or oversize loads
- Basic mechanical knowledge
Safety Expectations Safety is a fundamental responsibility of the Class 1 Driver. Drivers are expected to:
- Complete all required vehicle inspections.
- Properly secure all loads before transporting them.
- Ensure the truck and trailer are safe before entering public roads or worksites.
- Follow all speed limits, traffic laws, hours-of-service requirements, and company procedures.
- Never operate equipment while impaired, fatigued, or otherwise unfit to drive.
- Follow safe dumping procedures when operating end dumps, tri-dumps, tandems, and quads.
- Maintain awareness of overhead power lines, uneven ground, soft shoulders, other equipment, and personnel when dumping.
- Immediately report accidents, equipment defects, unsafe conditions, and near misses.
Working Conditions
This position may involve
- Local and regional hauling throughout Alberta.
- Gravel and aggregate hauling.
- Construction and industrial site work.
- Long periods of driving.
- Loading, unloading, dumping, tarping, chaining, and securing cargo.
- Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Driving and working in winter and adverse road conditions.
- Early morning starts, evenings, weekends, and extended hours depending on operational requirements.
Pay: $24.74-$36.80 per hour
