Summary of responsibilities

The incumbent organizes and directs the daily activities of the Acute Medicine Program. In collaboration with the Vice President, Physicians, and Patient Flow Manager, the Manager of Acute Medicine works to achieve optimal patient-focused clinical flow, clinical resource utilization and length of stay and acts as a resource to nursing departments, physicians and hospital community partners. The Manager of Acute Medicine ensures continuity of care, facilitates interdisciplinary care planning, serves as a physician liaison, encourages adherence to evidence best practices and facilitates learning and education of staff. His/her focus is clinical care to oversee the provision of care to meet the needs of the complex health issues of medical and palliative patients, and to oversee a smooth transition to home.

General Accountabilities

- Acting as a leader to nursing staff and the health care team, regarding evidence-based advanced nursing practice, problem-based needs analysis and strategies for change.
- Assisting nursing staff in the development of clinical decision making and problem-solving skills through case consultation, clinical demonstration, case review, bedside rounds, etc.
- Acting as a resource person, through informal and formal conferencing with nursing and other allied health care professionals in determining appropriate strategies to achieve patient-focused outcomes.




- Developing program specific patient/nursing care standards in keeping with the corporate strategic direction, the College of Nurses of Ontario and recognized specialty care association guidelines.
- Leading the development and revision of evidence-based clinical standards and core competencies.
- Acting as a role model in the application of standards and philosophy of nursing practice and nursing process, in the delivery of patient care and nursing education.
- Directing and developing nursing education and professional development programs within the program/specialty area and across the corporation.
- Conducting needs assessment in order to determine the educational requirements of the staff and legislated requirements of the specialty area.
- Establishing clinical outcomes of education programs.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the job

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Holds current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum 3 years’ nursing supervisory or management experience
- Recent related clinical experience (Medicine, Rehab, Stroke, Geriatrics, etc.)
- Familiar with medical-surgical equipment
- Excellent people, time management, conflict management, financial management and organization skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve and make recommendations for change and implement and evaluate
- Computer literacy (Cerner, MS Office, Excel, Outlook, databases, scheduling)
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Knowledge of collective agreements and experience working in a unionized environment
- Functional proficiency in English, oral and written

Assets:
- Master’s degree in a health-related field
- Functional level in oral French
