General Description The Transit Hostler is responsible for preparing, servicing, cleaning, and positioning municipal transit vehicles to ensure they are safe, clean, fueled, and ready for scheduled service. Duties include but are not limited to cleaning, fueling, maintaining fluids, and performing special cleaning as necessary as well as minor mechanical repairs. Associated paperwork and data entry are required. The Transit Hostler is responsible to perform this work following all relevant safety procedures.

Responsibilities

Fleet Placement and Service Readiness





Maintain the daily parking matrix and coordinate the placement of buses to support scheduled service.

Empty fare boxes from the vehicle.

Monitor vehicle status and appropriate placement of buses in the fleet yard.

Communicate with operations (Dispatch) as required regarding the parking matrix.

Fueling and Fluids

Fuel buses.

Check and top up all fluids including transmission, engine oil, coolant, windshield washer, and urea.

Report any service line defects to the supervisor.

Record bus numbers, kilometres and total fuel consumption using data entry system.

Driving

Operate the transit vehicles as needed to prepare and position for service.

Drive and place the bus as directed by the placer’s parking matrix.

Interior Wash/Cleaning

Sweep the interior of the bus.

Remove garbage, debris, and lost-and-found items in accordance with established procedures.

Clean and disinfect operator areas, floors, walls, ceilings, windows, and other interior surfaces.

At times, removal of hazardous material using established practices and procedures.

Minor Maintenance/Repairs

Check tires and wheel nuts and report any defects to the supervisor.

Minor mechanical repairs to the fleet. (e.g., Replacing bulbs, wiper blades and mirrors, tire repairs and grease and oil changes).

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to read and interpret policies, procedural manuals, Safety Data Sheets and other work-related documents.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Manage time,



priorities, and work in pressure situations with multiple deadlines.

Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.

Ability to recognize hazards and comply with safe work practices, procedures, and required personal protective equipment.

Proven ability to work as part of a team.

Utilize computer equipment to input work order information and complete other basic computer functions.

Use of basic hand tools.

Education And Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.

Two (2) years of experience in the servicing of fleet vehicles (e.g., checking oils, fluids, coolant, fueling, cleaning and general operation) and completing minor mechanical repairs (e.g., changing wiper blades, tires, headlights, and fluids)

Other Requirements

Submission of a Criminal Record Check.

A valid Class Three (3) Operator's License is required.

Q-endorsement (Air Brakes) is required.

A valid Class Two (2) Operator's License is an asset.

Equipment field testing and/or competency testing will be required as part of the interview evaluation.

Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.

Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.

Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.

Safety As an employee of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the incumbent is responsible for understanding and actively participating in the RMWB's health and safety management system, including all policies, practices, procedures, as well as properly utilizing all control measures including the required use of personal protective equipment. All employees must take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and others, as well as immediately report any concerns, near misses, incidents, and hazardous conditions to their supervisor.
