About the Role The Connection Design Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Calgary, AB. This position is responsible for designing steel connections for structural and miscellaneous steel projects, ensuring safety, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards. Day-to-day tasks include preparing and reviewing connection design calculations, producing and modifying CAD models and drawings, and collaborating with project managers, detailers, fabricators, and erection crews to resolve technical issues.
The role also involves coordinating with engineering and production teams to optimize designs for cost, efficiency, and fabrication, as well as supporting project schedules by responding promptly to design inquiries and revisions.

Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate day-to-day technical communication with internal and external drafting and detailing teams.
- Support the Senior Connections Engineer with structural steel connection design, calculations, reviews, and technical problem-solving.
- Assist in developing and continuously improving engineering standards, design details, calculation tools, and design sketches.
- Support drafting and detailing teams by providing timely engineering input and helping resolve technical issues that may affect project schedules.
- Participate in project coordination and technical meetings with internal teams, clients, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and support document control for contract documents, drawings, calculations, design sketches, and internal records.
- Review and support the technical assessment of contract changes, revisions, and related change-management activities.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, consultants, shop personnel, and field teams through responsive and professional communication.
- Manage and respond to engineering information flows, including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, design questions, and inspection-related documentation.
- Visit fabrication and construction sites as required and prepare site visit reports or technical observations.
- Prepare field sketches and technical details under the supervision of the Senior Connections Engineer or Engineer of Record, as applicable.
- Support the development and maintenance of engineering procedures that meet or exceed applicable industry standards and project requirements.
- Identify, develop, and implement practical process improvements that enhance engineering quality, efficiency, and constructability.
- Provide hands-on technical support to drafting, fabrication, and field teams as required.
- Review and mark up drawings to support accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements,
under appropriate engineering supervision.
- Review new projects early to identify connection-design risks, constructability issues, and information gaps before they affect fabrication or erection.
- Perform additional engineering and project-support tasks as assigned by the Senior Connections Engineer.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registered with APEGA as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or eligible to pursue registration through APEGA.
- Working knowledge of structural design software and CAD tools, with the ability to review and work with BIM/IFC 3D models.
- Demonstrated understanding of structural steel behavior and connection design principles. Previous connection design experience is an asset but is not required for a strong early-career candidate.
- Experience with Bluebeam or similar PDF drawing-markup and document-management software.
- Clear, professional, and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
- General knowledge of structural steel fabrication, erection, construction practices, and applicable design standards.
- Ability and willingness to develop practical knowledge of shop fabrication and field erection processes.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet project deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
- Comfortable collaborating with engineering, drafting, estimating, project management, shop, field, and senior management teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of structural steel connection design experience in a fabrication or consulting workplace.
- Current E.I.T. or P.Eng. registration with APEGA.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
Working Conditions
- This is primarily an in-office role with occasional visits to fabrication facilities and active construction sites. Remote work is not available for this position.
