Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and technically skilled Construction Manager to oversee a residential building construction project in rural Nova Scotia. This role is ideal for an engineer who combines traditional construction management with deep technical expertise in structural engineering, building physics, and timber engineering. You will independently manage the construction site through the implementation phase, ensuring technical accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and quality at every stage.
Strong working knowledge of North American construction methods, such as wood framing, platform framing, and stick-built construction, is essential. This is a excellent opportunity for a proactive, technically-minded leader who thrives on close collaboration with architects, engineers, and subcontractors, and who is comfortable managing a remote or rural job site.
Duties
- Independently oversee and coordinate the construction of a residential property in full compliance with local (Nova Scotia) regulatory requirements, managing all trades and subcontractors on-site during the implementation phase.
- Monitor construction progress to ensure schedules are met, and manage cost centers to maintain project cost-effectiveness.
- Review measurements and invoices, and process client-driven changes in scope of work.
- Conduct technical plausibility checks on construction drawings, evaluating structural engineering and building physics factors — including thermal insulation, moisture protection, and sound insulation — to catch design errors early.
- Ensure professional execution to required quality standards, and support official inspections and approvals.
- Manage interfaces and maintain close coordination between architects, structural and building services engineers, and contractors.
- Create and update construction schedules throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate logistics specific to a rural site, including materials delivery, trade availability, and site access.
Experience
- A completed degree in architecture or civil engineering (B.Arts/M.Arts/B.Eng./M.Eng.), with a focus on building construction or structural engineering.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in a comparable position.
- In-depth understanding of load transfer and structural systems, including masonry, steel, or timber construction.
- Solid knowledge of thermal building physics and fire protection as related to modern building envelopes.
- Strong knowledge of North American construction methods, particularly platform framing and stick-built construction, along with associated material standards.
- Proficiency in relevant building codes and standards (e.g., National Building Code of Canada, IBC/IRC); familiarity with Eurocodes is an asset but not required.
- Strong assertiveness and negotiation skills for working with subcontractors and clients, along with excellent teamwork abilities.
- Comfortable and self-sufficient managing a project in a rural setting, with strong independent decision-making skills.
Join us as a Construction Manager where your technical expertise will help bring a residential project to life in rural Nova Scotia with precision and quality. Pay: $70,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
