Summary:
The Design Engineer leads in the design and delivery of Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (ACHEs) in accordance with customer specifications, applicable industry codes, and company standards. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this position provides technical leadership, oversight, and mentorship to design personnel while ensuring engineering deliverables are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.
This role combines hands-on design expertise with people leadership, driving continuous improvement initiatives, supporting employee development, and collaborating with sales, project, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver high-quality engineered solutions. The ideal candidate is a technically strong leader with ACHE design experience, a passion for developing people, and a commitment to engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Team Development
- Provide day-to-day supervision, mentorship, and technical guidance to Design Technologists.
- Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, and drawings to ensure compliance with customer requirements, industry standards, and company procedures.
- Collaborative and encourage continuous improvement culture within the engineering team.
- Support performance management activities in partnership with the Engineering Manager.
Design Execution & Technical Oversight
- Design and engineer Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers using software and technical data to meet customer specifications, project requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are completed accurately, efficiently,
and within established project schedules.
- Provide technical support and problem-solving assistance to engineering, production, sales, and project teams.
- Verify compliance with engineering standards.
- Review and resolve technical issues, design challenges, and customer-specific requirements.
Process Improvement & Quality
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve engineering processes, workflows, quality, and design efficiency.
- Promote standardization of design practices, templates, calculations, and documentation.
- Support development and maintenance of engineering procedures, work instructions, and design tools.
- Ensure engineering activities align with quality management requirements and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor engineering metrics and team performance to improve productivity and project outcomes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Sales, Estimating, Project Management, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Quality teams throughout project execution.
- Support proposal development and technical reviews as required.
- Communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders regarding technical requirements and project deliverables.
- Escalate resource constraints,
project risks, schedule concerns, and systemic issues to the Engineering Manager.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (BSc or BS) in Mechanical Engineering necessary
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is considered an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Air-Cooled Heat Exchanger design, pressure vessel design, heat transfer equipment, or a related industrial manufacturing setting.
- Previous experience leading, mentoring, or supervising technical personnel is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME Section VIII Division 1, API 661, ASCE, and AISC requirements.
- Experience with welded steel fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency with engineering and drafting software, including AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Working Conditions
- Office-based position located in Edmonton, Alberta.
- Occasional interaction with manufacturing and production environments.
- Travel required on an as-needed basis, typically less than 10% of the time.
- Ability to work additional hours periodically to support project requirements and deadlines.
