Digital Architect – Government of Alberta

Location: Edmonton, AB – Primarily Remote

Contract: 3 months initially, with potential extension up to 24 months

Work Arrangement: Remote within Canada; occasional travel to Edmonton/Alberta may be required

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Digital Architect to support Government of Alberta digital transformation, service innovation, and program review initiatives.

The Digital Architect will work closely with Product Owners, developers, designers, and cross-functional teams to design and deliver scalable, secure, and user-focused digital services. This role combines software architecture, technical leadership, agile delivery, and business collaboration .

What You'll Do

- Lead solution architecture for digital services and ensure alignment with architectural standards.
- Develop architectural plans and assess existing systems, technical feasibility, risks, and dependencies.
- Design scalable solutions supporting iterative implementation and continuous delivery.
- Define system boundaries, integrations, APIs, and interactions between platforms.
- Identify opportunities to reuse common components and digital capabilities.
- Provide technical guidance on detailed solution design and implementation.
- Review code changes and contribute to development when required.
- Work closely with Product Owners and cross-functional product teams.
- Coach and mentor development teams on architecture and technical decisions.




- Support agile activities including backlog refinement, sprint planning, delivery, and continuous improvement .
- Develop architecture documentation, diagrams, presentations, and technical materials.
- Contribute to architectural standards, principles, metrics, and quality practices.

Required Qualifications
- Strong experience in Software Architecture / Digital Architecture .
- Experience designing and implementing complex digital solutions.
- Strong understanding of Agile and iterative software development .
- Experience with APIs, system integration, application architecture, and distributed systems .
- Strong technical problem-solving and architectural decision-making skills.
- Ability to evaluate technical risks, dependencies, and trade-offs.
- Experience working with cross-functional product delivery teams.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder management experience.
- Ability to review code and contribute to development when required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Government or public-sector digital transformation experience.
- Experience with legacy modernization and cloud transformation .
- Experience with DevSecOps and contemporary software delivery practices.
- Enterprise architecture experience.
- Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
- Experience developing reusable architecture standards, principles, and components.
