Position Summary

Habitat for Humanity Okanagan seeks a strategic, hands-on finance professional to lead and manage all financial operations of our dynamic, mission-driven organization.

The Director of Finance is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for both the strategic oversight and day-to-day administration of the organization's financial functions. This role oversees budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit preparation, cash management, mortgage accounting, payroll, compliance reporting, and internal controls while also performing key accounting and bookkeeping functions.

This is a full time fixed-term contract position with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent role, subject to organizational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategic Support

- Provide financial leadership and strategic advice to the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Support organizational planning through financial analysis, forecasting, and scenario modeling.
- Prepare financial reports, analyses, and recommendations for the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Identify efficiencies and recommend improvements to financial systems and processes.
- Support contract, insurance, and risk management reviews.

Financial Reporting & Accounting

- Produce timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain the general ledger and all accounting records.
- Perform account reconciliations including:
- Bank accounts
- Donations
- Benefits
- Mortgage receivables
- General ledger accounts
- Prepare journal entries and oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ensure accurate recording of revenues, expenses, assets, liabilities, deferred revenue, gifts-in-kind, and mortgage transactions.
- Prepare monthly financial snapshots and key performance metrics.

Budgeting & Forecasting

- Lead the annual budgeting process for operating and building committee.
- Work with leadership to develop departmental budgets.
- Monitor budgets and provide regular variance analysis.
- Develop short- and long-term cash flow forecasts.
- Provide financial reporting for construction projects, grants, and special initiatives.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

- Oversee and participate in accounts payable functions.




- Review invoices and payment processing.
- Monitor receivables, mortgage payments, and collections.
- Process bank deposits and ensure timely recording of donations and other receipts.

Payroll & Benefits Administration

- Payroll processing and ensure compliance with legislated requirements.
- Maintain employee leave tracking including vacation and sick leave.
- Administer employee benefits and related reporting.
- Prepare year-end payroll reporting including T4s and Records of Employment.

Regulatory & Compliance Reporting

- Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements including:
- CRA charitable filings
- Payroll remittances (CPP, EI, Income Tax)
- GST returns and Public Service Body rebates
- PST reporting
- WorkSafeBC reporting
- Ensure compliance with CRA requirements relating to charitable receipting.
- Coordinate reporting requirements for Habitat Canada.

Audit & Internal Controls

- Lead the annual audit process.
- Liaise with external auditors, Finance Committee, and CEO.
- Maintain supporting documentation and schedules.
- Develop and monitor internal control procedures.
- Ensure strong financial governance.

Program Financial Support

ReStore Operations

- Maintain accurate financial records for ReStore locations.
- Track revenue, expenses, inventory-related transactions, and donations.

Build Program

- Maintain project accounting for all building initiatives.
- Track fundraising, construction costs, gifts-in-kind, and project budgets.
- Support forecasting and reporting for the Build Committee.

Family Services

- Assist with financial assessments of applicant families.
- Maintain mortgage accounting records and reconciliations.
- Collaborate with Family Services staff on annual homeowner reviews.
- Work with MCAP and homeowners regarding mortgage balances and payoffs.

Fund Development

- Assist with grant budgets and reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate records for fundraising campaigns, special events, and donor-restricted funds.

Administrative & Record Management





- Maintain accurate physical and digital financial records.
- Ensure documentation is complete, organized, and audit-ready.
- Support management with additional financial and administrative projects as required.

Relationships & Collaboration

- Reports directly to the CEO.
- Works closely with the Senior Leadership Team.
- Supports the Treasurer, Finance Committee, Building Committee, Board of Directors, and auditors.
- Maintains effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, vendors, donors, banking partners, and external stakeholders.

Financial Accountability

This position

- Manages financial operations for an annual operating budget exceeding $7.5 million.
- Oversees accounting related to build projects and mortgage receivables.
- Maintains banking relationships with Beem Credit Union and Valley First Credit Union.
- Has responsibility for financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting administration.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

- CPA designation (or equivalent accounting designation).
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible financial management experience.
- Experience preparing financial statements and managing full-cycle accounting.
- Strong understanding of Canadian GAAP and not-for-profit accounting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, audit preparation, and financial controls.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

- Experience in the charitable or not-for-profit sector.
- Experience with fund accounting.
- Experience with mortgage accounting and receivables management.
- Experience using Viewpoint Spectrum.
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers.

Pay: $80,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
