Position Description:

Reporting to the Dean, and working in close partnership with the Associate Deans, academic administrators, the Chief Administrative Officer, and senior leaders, the Director, Office of the Dean is responsible for advancing the Dean's institutional mandate by facilitating, implementing and coordinating Faculty-wide academic, governance and strategic priorities. As the Dean's designate for governance and institutional administration, the Director provides leadership for all academic lifecycle activities, governance, strategic planning, executive operations and special institutional initiatives.

As a senior member of the Faculty's leadership team, the Director serves as the Dean's principal advisor on governance, institutional policy and executive decision-making. The incumbent provides strategic advice to the Dean,



Associate Deans and senior administrators on governance matters, including academic initiatives requiring Faculty and University approval, supports cyclical undergraduate and graduate program reviews, new program approvals and quality assurance processes in accordance with the University of Toronto Quality Assurance Process (UTQAP), advises the Dean and the Chair of Faculty Council on complex, sensitive or politically significant matters; and coordinates initiatives requiring Faculty Council, Provostial and Governing Council approvals.

The Director develops, implements and evaluates governance frameworks, administrative policies, operational processes and institutional initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness, promote evidence-informed decision-making, and ensure compliance with University policies, accreditation standards and Faculty governance. The position manages highly confidential matters requiring exceptional judgment, diplomacy, political acuity and discretion. Working at the highest level of confidentiality, the Director provides direct executive administrative support to the Dean and Associate Deans, when requested.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

University degree in a related field. An advanced degree an asset or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of progressive experience in academic administration, governance, policy development, quality assurance, accreditation, strategic planning, executive advisory; and executive support within a post-secondary environment.

Demonstrated leadership, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, political acuity,



project leadership and management expertise, committee management and the ability to manage highly confidential matters.

Demonstrated experience in liaising with senior administrators, responding to and handling matters of a complex, confidential and highly sensitive nature. Working in this fast-paced, dynamic, complex environment.

Skills:

Superior oral and written communications skills. Strong analytical and organizational skills.

Demonstrated experience in managing complex multiple projects to completion. Must be able to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Ability to assimilate and interpret significant amounts of information. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, various scheduling software products.

Other:

Self-starter. Detail-oriented with high analytical and negotiation ability. Responsive. Meets deadlines. Flexibility to work in a consensus-driven environment. Political sensitivity and ability to work effectively with high-level staff across the University system and in outside organizations.

Requires a keen understanding of the policy and procedures of governance. Strong “integrative” skills related to understanding cross-functional implications and inter-relationships of issues and decisions; integrity; meticulous approach to work; ability to deal with confidential situations; confidentiality, tact and diplomacy; ability to influence others over whom there is no direct reporting relationship to achieve tasks and functional responsibilities by means of esteem, credibility and relationship-building skills.
