Summary:
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the Engineering and Design functions supporting the design, detailing, and delivery of Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (ACHEs). This position provides strategic and technical leadership to Engineering Design Supervisors, Design Technologists, and engineering personnel, ensuring customer requirements, applicable industry codes, quality standards, and project schedules are achieved.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Engineering Manager is accountable for engineering performance, resource planning, process improvement, technical excellence, and employee development. The role works closely with Sales, Estimating, Project Management, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Quality to ensure the successful execution of projects while driving continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and innovation within the engineering organization. The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineering leader with solid ACHE expertise, proven people leadership experience, and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineered solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Engineering Design Supervisors, Design Technologists, and technical personnel to support organizational and project objectives.
- Establish departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with business objectives.
- Manage workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning, training, and professional development initiatives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching, feedback, and career development support.
- Promote engineering best practices and ensure consistency across engineering and detailing activities.
Engineering Management & Technical Oversight
- Provide overall technical leadership and direction for the design and detailing of Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers.
- Ensure engineering deliverables meet customer specifications, project requirements, applicable codes, and company standards.
- Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, standards, and technical procedures as required.
- Support complex technical problem-solving and risk mitigation throughout project execution.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical guidance during proposal development, project execution, manufacturing, and customer support activities.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and implement strategies to improve engineering efficiency, quality, productivity, and project execution.
- Drive standardization of engineering processes, calculation methods, templates, and documentation.
- Monitor engineering performance metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support the development and implementation of new technologies, tools, and design methodologies.
- Lead initiatives focused on reducing costs, improving quality, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
- Ensure continuous alignment between engineering activities and organizational objectives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Quality teams to support successful project delivery.
- Participate in project reviews, risk assessments, and strategic planning activities.
- Support customer meetings and provide technical expertise during proposal, execution, and post-project stages.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Communicate departmental priorities, resource requirements, project risks, and operational challenges to senior leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) designation required.
- Minimum 10-15 years of engineering experience in Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers, heat transfer equipment, pressure vessels, or related industrial manufacturing industries.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience managing engineering teams.
- Strong knowledge of ASME Section VIII Division 1, API 661, ASCE, AISC, and related industry standards.
- Experience with welded steel fabrication and industrial manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger design and applications is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing competing priorities.
- Proficiency with engineering software, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to balance technical, operational, and commercial considerations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions
- Office-based position located in Edmonton, Alberta or Houston, Texas
- Occasional interaction with manufacturing and production environments.
- Travel required on an as-needed basis, typically less than 10% of the time.
