The Position
Under the supervision of the Child and Family Support Services Manager, the Family Support Worker is responsible for supporting in office program participants with their day-to-day needs, including but not limited to emotional support, connecting with external resources, and conflict resolution. This role will also support the Strengthening Families Team to promote the safety and well-being of Sechelt Nation children, youth, families, and community services for families.
Family Support
Workers will be based on-site of the Supportive Family Housing units and available to respond to circumstances as they arise. This position is expected to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances on-site.
Note: This is a maternity leave coverage through December 2027.
The Candidate
- Provide day-to-day support to the Child and Family Support Services Manager, Strengthening Families Team and Supportive Housing Development Coordinator.
- Participate in working groups, meetings, and information sessions internally or with external groups.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; communicate effectively and sensitively with clients from diverse backgrounds, including conflict resolution.
- Maintain flexibility in schedule and respond to unexpected emergencies and changes in workload to fulfill responsibilities.
- Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings and client care meetings as requested.
- Provide help/guidance to on-site program participants (ex., emotional support, conflict resolution, connection to resources, etc.).
- Communicate successfully and positively with people who may have multiple barriers,
including physical disabilities, mental illness, addiction, and language barriers.
- Maintain and present a positive and professional image at all times.
- Balance conflicting priorities to manage workflow, ensure the completion of essential projects, and meet critical deadlines.
- Must be able to manage a client caseload and confidentially handle sensitive information.
- Perform other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
- Three (3) years of related experience in a social services field – this could include work for an outreach program, supportive housing program, shelter staff, or family support work.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate professionally with external agencies and effectively/sensitively with clients from diverse backgrounds, including conflict resolution.
- Analytical skills, sound judgement and decision-making skills are required to assess situations and determine the best possible outcomes.
- Non-violent conflict resolution training, or equivalent experience, will be considered an asset
- Proficient in the use of MS Office programs with advanced knowledge of Excel and strong database skills.
- Knowledge of shíshálh culture and community members is an asset.
- You may have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment, computers and attending meetings.
- You will come into contact with staff and community members and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of yourself and others.
- A valid driver’s license and a clean Criminal Record Check.
