Job Function

Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the Credit Union’s day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, and internal control framework. The Controller ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timely completion of financial information, supports external audits and regulatory requirements, and provides meaningful financial analysis to support decision-making.

This role leads the month-end and year-end close processes, oversees core accounting functions, supports Board and Audit Committee reporting, and provides leadership and guidance to the accounting team. The Controller also identifies opportunities to enhance processes, strengthen controls, and improve operational efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and professional integrity.

:

- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring financial results are completed accurately and on a timely basis.
- Prepare monthly financial reporting packages for Senior Management, including variance analysis, key financial metrics, and commentary on emerging trends.
- Support preparation of Board and Audit Committee financial reporting, including schedules, analysis, and supporting narratives.
- Maintain oversight of the general ledger, chart of accounts, accounting records, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with external auditors during interim and year-end audit processes, including preparation of working papers and responses to audit requests.
- Support regulatory reporting requirements, including filings required by FSRA, Central 1, CMHC, CRA, and other applicable regulatory bodies.
- Assist with liquidity, capital, allowance, and treasury-related reporting, including analysis supporting management decision-making.
- Support the development, documentation, and monitoring of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Review and improve accounting workflows,



leveraging technology and automation where appropriate to increase efficiency and reduce manual processing.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and technical support to members of the accounting team.
- Ensure timely completion of accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, journal entries, government remittances, and other routine accounting functions.
- Maintain confidentiality of member, employee, vendor, and financial information in accordance with internal policies and regulatory expectations.
- Participate in strategic projects, system implementations, process improvements, and cross-functional initiatives as required.

Job Requirements:

- Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation, or active progression toward completion of the CPA designation, is preferred.
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, and internal control practices.
- Knowledge of IFRS, including experience with IFRS 9 expected credit loss methodology, is considered an asset.
- Experience preparing or supporting regulatory reporting within a financial institution environment is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial results, identify trends, and communicate key insights clearly.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel; experience with Microsoft 365, accounting systems, banking systems, and reporting tools is considered an asset.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines, prioritize competing demands, and maintain accuracy under time-sensitive reporting cycles.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion,



and confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
- Robust organizational, problem-solving, and process improvement skills.
- Leadership experience, including supervising, coaching, or reviewing the work of accounting staff, is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with credit union operations, treasury reporting, liquidity monitoring, or capital adequacy reporting is considered an asset.
- Commitment to accuracy, accountability, continuous improvement, and professional integrity.
