Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable, safety-conscious, and motivated Flagger to join our road construction team. The Flagger is responsible for directing and controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic through and around construction zones while helping maintain a safe environment for workers, motorists, and the public.
This position requires strong communication skills, situational awareness, and the ability to remain attentive in a fast-paced outdoor work environment. The successful candidate will be comfortable working outdoors, following established safety procedures, and working as part of a construction team.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through construction zones using approved hand signals, signs, and traffic-control procedures.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with construction crews, equipment operators, motorists, and pedestrians.
- Maintain constant awareness of changing traffic and work-site conditions.
- Monitor work zones for potential hazards and report unsafe conditions to supervisory staff immediately.
- Assist with the placement, maintenance, and removal of traffic-control devices, including cones, signs, barricades, and other equipment.
- Maintain safe distances between traffic, workers, and construction equipment.
- Follow all company, site-specific, and occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Assist construction crews with general labour duties as required and directed.
- Maintain a professional and courteous approach when interacting with the public.
- Report accidents, incidents, hazards, or other safety concerns promptly to supervisory staff.
- Perform other duties related to traffic control and construction operations as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Previous flagging, traffic control, construction, or general labour experience is an asset but is not required.
- Valid flagging or traffic-control certification/ticket is considered an asset.
- Training may be provided to qualified candidates who do not have previous experience or certification.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks as required.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and established safety procedures.
- Reliable attendance and a strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a construction team.
- Previous construction experience or familiarity with heavy equipment and roadwork is considered an asset.
Compensation
- Starting wage: $20.00 per hour.
- Opportunities for wage growth based on experience, qualifications, and performance.
- Candidates with previous flagging or traffic-control experience and valid, recognized certifications or training tickets may be eligible for a higher starting wage.
- Additional opportunities for wage increases may be available as employees gain experience, obtain additional certifications,
and take on increased responsibilities.
Working Conditions
- This is an hourly position, with hours scheduled based on project requirements and operational needs.
- Work is weather dependent, and shifts may be delayed, shortened, rescheduled, or cancelled due to adverse weather or unsafe working conditions.
- Work is primarily outdoors in active road construction and work zones.
- Exposure to traffic, construction equipment, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions.
- May require early mornings, evenings, weekends, or extended hours depending on project requirements.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
- This position requires a high level of attention, situational awareness, and adherence to safety procedures.
Work Locations
- Work locations vary depending on active road construction projects and may be located throughout Alberta.
- Employees should be prepared to work at project sites in communities across the province, including Grande Prairie, Sylvan Lake, Edmonton, Hanna, and surrounding areas.
- Travel to and between project locations may be required.
- Specific work locations and schedules will be communicated based on project requirements.
