Summary:
The Food Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) programs to ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations, GFSI standards, and other third-party guidelines. This role ensures the delivery of cost-effective, high-quality services with minimal disruption to production.
The Food Safety
Manager will provide leadership and guidance to the FSQA team, mentor staff, and drive continuous improvement across all food safety, quality, and sanitation efforts. The manager will also maintain and update the Food Safety Plan and Quality Management System (QMS).
Preferred Qualifications and Assets:
· Minimum 5 years of leadership or management experience in Food Safety in a manufacturing environment.
· Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
· Fresh produce industry experience is considered an asset.
· Knowledge of primary production and food manufacturing is considered an asset.
· Experience with Organic certification/programs is considered an asset.
· Experience with Policy Hub is considered an asset.
· Experience with TraceGains is considered an asset.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is considered an asset.
· Experience using Sage X3 ERP is considered an asset.
· Additional language skills are considered an asset.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Safety & Quality Management:
· Maintain and update the Food Safety Plan and QMS to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
· Review, develop, and implement Standard Operating Procedures in line with company policies and regulatory guidance.
· Lead root cause investigations, implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs), and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented CAPAs.
· Drive continuous improvement efforts across food safety, productivity, and sanitation processes to enhance overall performance.
Audit & Compliance:
· Conduct regular internal audits to ensure compliance with CFIA, GFSI, Canadian Organic Standards, and other relevant certification schemes.
· Ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions resulting from audits, inspections, and compliance activities.
· Submit detailed inspection reports, non-conformances, and corrective action plans on a monthly basis.
Leadership & Team Development:
· Lead with a servant leadership approach, identifying and removing obstacles to team success.
· Foster a highly engaged and effective team by maintaining accountability for performance, attendance, and conduct.
· Build and develop a team that provides exceptional internal customer service and promote leadership development at all levels.
· Establish regular meetings with team members to keep track of key metrics and progress. Provide mentoring, guidance and opportunities for individual growth through internal and external training.
Trend Analysis & Reporting:
· Analyze trends related to (but not limited to) outgoing product inspections, metal detectors, and product weights, shifting from a reactive "check-complete" approach to a proactive "monitor, assess, adjust" approach for continuous improvement.
· Deliver weekly Food Safety Reports highlighting key metrics, KPIs, progress, and concerns.
Training & Performance Monitoring:
· Ensure that all staff receive necessary food safety training, including topics like personnel practices, allergen management, food fraud,
food defense, and critical control points.
· Maintain an up-to-date training matrix and monitor compliance with training requirements.
· Measure key metrics and KPIs to track progress and performance in food safety, quality, and sanitation inspections, including performance indicators such as Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) completion rate, pre-operational pass rate, and environmental pass rate.
· Apply disciplinary actions when necessary to address performance issues or violations of company policies, ensuring fair and consistent enforcement in accordance with organizational guidelines.
· Recognize and reward team members who exceed performance targets, fostering a positive work environment and motivating continued success and achievement.
Cost Management & Efficiency:
· Research and prepare cost estimates, business justification, and budget considerations for FSQA-related projects, repairs, and equipment purchases.
· Identify opportunities for cost savings, including improving efficiencies without compromising food safety and quality.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Operational Improvement:
· Foster solid working relationships with departments like HR, Harvest, Compost, Sanitation, and Packing to support and align food safety efforts across the organization.
· Actively engage with peers to develop and execute strategies that support the company’s long-term food safety goals.
· Lead continuous improvement initiatives that align with food safety objectives.
· Ability to collaborate with other business units on initiatives to unify Food Safety practices and policies.
