POSITION TITLE: Genealogical Researcher

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Genealogical Manager
Brief Overview:
Reporting to the Genealogical Manager and Registrar, the Genealogical Researcher conducts genealogical research to verify Métis ancestry and support citizenship decisions. This role involves researching historical records, analyzing family lineages, and documenting evidence to ensure citizenship determinations are accurate, consistent, and supported by reliable documentation.
The Genealogical Researcher also provides guidance to Registry staff, applicants, and stakeholders, maintains the integrity and confidentiality of genealogical records, and supports consistent research practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct genealogical research in accordance with workplace policies, research standards, and ethical practices.
- Research, analyze, and evaluate historical records to verify Métis ancestry and citizenship eligibility.
- Examine and document evidence from primary and secondary historical sources to support research findings.
- Prepare and maintain accurate genealogy files and supporting documentation for citizenship applications.
- Conduct research to support harvesting applications and verify documented Métis lineage.
- Assist applicants and the public in understanding genealogical research requirements and historical records.
- Organize, preserve, and maintain genealogical records in accordance with records management and confidentiality requirements.
- Research historical sources such as church and parish records, census records, vital statistics, land records, court records, cemetery records, newspapers, obituaries, family histories, and archival collections.
- Locate and substantiate records documenting births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, burials, adoptions, and other family events.
- Evaluate the reliability of historical evidence, resolve conflicting information, and document research conclusions.
- Maintain detailed research notes, source citations, and family trees to support transparent and consistent decision-making.
- Promote understanding of the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan citizenship requirements and genealogical standards.
- Work collaboratively with Registry staff, historians, archivists, genealogists, and external organizations.
- Contribute to improvements in research processes and perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of genealogical research methods and documentation standards.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, genealogy, and historical communities.
- Familiarity with archival research and historical records, including church, census, land, court, and vital statistics records.
- Solid analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret historical records, assess conflicting evidence, and make well-supported conclusions.
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and electronic records management systems.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to professionalism, integrity, cultural competency, and respectful engagement with Métis citizens and communities.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Canadian History, Genealogy, Archival Studies, Anthropology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least one (1) year of experience conducting genealogical, historical, archival, or lineage research.
- Professional genealogical certification through the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society or another recognized organization.
- Experience with historical records, citizenship verification, or Indigenous genealogy is considered an asset.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation.
