Scona Industries is a growing machine shop in Guelph, Ontario, specializing in custom machining, production machining, repair and replacement components, prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and general manufacturing support.
Our work varies from one-off and custom parts to small production runs and repeat production. We work with a wide range of local manufacturers and businesses, providing machining and manufacturing solutions to keep their operations moving.
We are looking for a General Machinist or Tool & Die Maker to join our growing team.
This is a hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and taking a job from setup through completion. The right person will have an opportunity to grow with the company, learn new processes, and take on more responsibility as Scona Industries continues to expand.

The work can change from day to day. We are looking for someone who enjoys working on different types of parts and projects rather than doing the same operation all day.

Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC milling and turning equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models.
- Select appropriate tooling, workholding, speeds, feeds, and machining methods.
- Make machine offsets and adjustments to maintain part quality.
- Perform CNC program edits and basic programming as required.
- Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
- Complete jobs from setup through final inspection.
- Troubleshoot machining and setup issues.
- Perform manual machining when required.
- Make and modify fixtures, tooling, and workholding as required.
- Deburr, finish, assemble, and prepare completed parts.
- Assist with welding, fabrication, and mechanical assembly when required.
- Maintain machines, tooling, and a clean and organized work area.
- Help identify better and more efficient ways to complete jobs.
- Follow company safety and quality procedures.
Qualifications & Experience
- 429A General Machinist or 430A Tool & Die Maker certification preferred.
- Red Seal certification is an asset.
- Equivalent hands-on machining experience will be considered.
- Previous experience setting up and operating CNC mills and/or lathes.
- Strong understanding of machining fundamentals.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and blueprints.
- Experience using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
- Good understanding of tooling, workholding, feeds, and speeds.
- CNC programming and G-code experience is an asset.
- Fanuc control experience is an asset.
- HURCO milling and/or turning experience is an asset, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
- Tooling, fixture, jig, and die-making experience is an asset.
- Manual milling and turning experience is an asset.
- CAD/CAM experience is an asset.
- Welding and fabrication experience is an asset.
- Robust mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned jobs.
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to producing quality work.
- Comfortable working in a small-shop environment where priorities and jobs can change.
