Department Information

The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) provides the residents of the Northwest Territories with access to quality programs, services and support to assist them in making informed and productive choices for themselves and their families with regard to education, training, careers, employment and labour, child development, languages, culture and heritage.

Job Information

This appealing role provides an chance to make a meaningful impact across the Northwest Territories. The position supports the Indigenization of education, through curriculum and program development, by working with schools, educators, Elders, and communities to strengthen Indigenous language and culture programming. It also contributes to initiatives such as the Indigenous Language Instructor Employment Plan (ILIEP), helping to build community capacity and support the growth of the Indigenous language workforce.

Key Responsibilities

Support education bodies in the implementation of the Indigenous Languages and Education (ILE) Policy to enhance Indigenous language and culture learning opportunities for Grades 7-12 students across the Northwest Territories.

Actively participates in committees and interdivisional working groups and teams with respect to divisional and departmental priorities.

Supports staff and acts as the Manager, 7-12 School Programs, as required.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire knowledge of Indigenous educational,



social and culture issues and challenges, specific to, but not limited to, the NWT.

Knowledge and understanding of educational philosophies, theory, pedagogy, and instructional practice.

Ability to learn and apply understanding of the impacts that colonization, institutional and structural racism, and biases have on society, in particular Indigenous people.

Ability to develop or coordinate the development of curricula, strategies, research projects literature reviews, resources and support materials.

Ability to work cooperatively in teams from various backgrounds and cultures.

Ability to adapt communications styles to multiple cultural environments.

Key qualifications A Degree in Education or related field and three (3) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year of experience in Indigenous language learning or Culture-based education within a JK-12 Northern classroom.

A Master in Education or related field and two (2) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year of experience in Indigenous language learning or Culture-based education within a JK-12 Northern classroom.
