About the Role
The Head of School at MacLachlan College will be an inspiring and engaged leader who will lead our School into the next chapter of its story. The Head of School will nurture a thriving MacLachlan College community that engages faculty, staff, students, families and community partners. Working in close collaboration with an engaged and visionary Director, the Head of School will play a critical role in advancing bold ideas and bringing operational discipline and structure to their execution. This requires a leader who is not only comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment, but who can also provide thoughtful balance, offering sound judgment, prioritization and a steadying influence to ensure initiatives are sustainable, aligned and effectively delivered.
The role of the Head of School is dynamic, requiring expertise in identifying, setting and executing on long‑term strategy, building and maintaining an engaged and inclusive community and leading day‑to‑day operations.
The Head of School is the leader of our community and acts as an ambassador and role model, whose actions reflect MacLachlan College’s values in their engagement with faculty, staff, students, families, alumni and the broader community.
Key Responsibilities
- Articulate an exciting future for MacLachlan College that continues to honour the School’s history and values, while continuing to provide academic excellence and an exceptional and personalized student experience.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for growth, program innovation, and market differentiation.
- Contribute to the School’s continued growth and evolution, supporting high‑impact, forward‑looking initiatives.
- Partner with the Director to shape and execute the strategic vision of the School, translating bold ideas into transparent, actionable plans.
- Lead the ongoing evolution of the School’s academic and co‑curricular offerings to ensure a distinctive and high‑quality value proposition.
- Operate with a high degree of agility, responding to opportunities and challenges in real time.
- Bring structure, prioritization, and operational discipline to strategic initiatives, ensuring effective implementation and follow‑through.
- Oversee the day‑to‑day operations of the School, including academics, student experience, staffing, and administration.
- Ensure the School operates efficiently, with strong alignment between vision, resources, and outcomes.
- Maintain open, transparent communication to ensure alignment on key decisions and direction.
- Build, lead and mentor a high‑performing leadership team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Cultivate a supportive workplace culture where faculty and staff are engaged and motivated to work to their fullest potential.
- Demonstrate a commitment to staff well‑being, professional development, and succession planning.
- Champion the School externally, building solid relationships with current and prospective families.
- Support enrollment growth and retention through a compelling school experience and clear articulation of the School’s value proposition.
- Actively contribute to the School’s reputation and positioning within the market.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and student‑centered culture aligned with the School’s values.
- Ensure a high‑quality educational experience that supports both academic excellence and student well‑being.
- Lead with a mindset of continuous improvement, regularly assessing and enhancing the student and family experience.
Skills and Qualifications
- A minimum of five years of experience working in a senior/executive leadership capacity at an independent school. Previous Head of School experience is an asset.
- Minimum of ten years of experience in education or within the education sector.
- Post‑secondary education in a relevant field.
- A member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the International Baccalaureate program is an asset.
- A proven track record of leadership and experience working in elementary and secondary education, demonstrating a commitment to excellence in education.
- A proven track record of leading large multidisciplinary teams.
- A demonstrated commitment to staff well‑being, professional development, and succession planning.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication and relationship building with a wide and diverse community.
- Demonstrated track record of cultivating a culture of engagement, innovation, and excellence in student learning and overall school experience.
- Deep experience building strong, trust‑based relationships with all members of the school community.
