Aeolus Staffing Solutions is supporting Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in the search for an experienced Hoisting & Rigging Engineering Specialist for its Chalk River, Ontario site.
This is a specialized engineering position for an experienced engineer who can independently support complex hoisting and rigging activities from initial engineering assessment and lift planning through field execution.
This is not a general mechanical design position . The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience developing and/or independently reviewing complete engineered lift plans, performing load and rigging calculations, assessing lifting equipment and supporting lifting activities directly in the field.
The position supports both nuclear and non-nuclear activities and requires close collaboration with engineering, operations, maintenance personnel, contractors, crane operators and rigging teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently develop, review and provide engineering support for engineered and critical lift plans .
- Perform engineering calculations associated with hoisting and rigging activities, including load assessment, load distribution, centre of gravity, rigging configurations, sling forces/angles, lifting points and equipment capacities.
- Evaluate and provide engineering recommendations regarding cranes, hoists, rigging systems and below-the-hook lifting devices.
- Review lifting methodologies, rigging arrangements and contractor-prepared lift plans for technical adequacy and safe execution.
- Develop and review technical calculations, drawings, engineering reports, specifications, procedures and other controlled engineering deliverables.
- Conduct field walkdowns, inspections and assessments to verify actual site conditions and determine engineering requirements.
- Provide direct engineering support during the execution of complex and critical lifts.
- Work closely with crane operators, riggers, millwrights, maintenance personnel, contractors, operations and project teams.
- Assess field changes and provide appropriate engineering review, calculations, documentation and approvals through established engineering change-control processes .
- Investigate hoisting, rigging, lifting-device and equipment-related issues and provide technically sound recommendations and corrective actions.
- Support engineering standards, technical governance, continuous improvement and safe lifting practices.
- Ensure engineering activities and documentation comply with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements and site procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural Engineering , or another closely related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer ( P.Eng. ) designation or demonstrated eligibility for professional engineering registration in Ontario.
- Demonstrated professional experience in hoisting, rigging, heavy-lift or lifting engineering .
- Hands-on experience developing and/or independently reviewing complete engineered lift plans or critical lift plans .
- Strong understanding of load calculations, rigging calculations, lifting configurations and structural/mechanical considerations associated with complex lifts.
- Experience supporting lifting activities directly in an industrial or construction field environment.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and technical documentation.
- Experience working with applicable lifting, rigging,
structural and mechanical engineering codes and standards.
- Experience producing controlled engineering documentation and working within formal design/change-control processes.
- Strong technical judgment with the ability to work independently and provide engineering recommendations for safety-critical work.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both engineering and skilled-trades personnel.
Highly Desirable Experience Experience in one or more of the following would be considered a strong asset:
- Nuclear facilities or nuclear projects
- Power generation
- Mining
- Steel or metals
- Heavy industrial facilities
- Major construction / EPC projects
- Heavy transport and specialized lifting
- Crane and hoist engineering
- Lifting-device design and assessment
- ASME B30 series
- ASME BTH-1
- CSA and other applicable Canadian engineering standards
- Engineering investigations and failure assessments
- Nuclear-quality or similarly regulated engineering documentation
Location & Work Arrangement · This position is based at Chalk River Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario and requires regular onsite presence.
· This is a 100% onsite position and does not offer a hybrid or remote work arrangement. Candidates who are not currently within commuting distance must be willing to relocate to the Chalk River area.

Compensation
· $100,000 – $160,000 CAD annually , depending on qualifications and directly relevant experience.
