Técnicas Reunidas Canada E&C; inc. is part of the Técnicas Reunidas Group, a global leader in engineering, procurement and construction services for energy and large-scale industrial projects.
We are seeking an experienced HSE – Process Safety Engineer to join our engineering project team. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and expertise in Process Safety, Fire Protection Engineering, Loss Prevention, and HSE Engineering activities across energy, industrial, power generation, and infrastructure projects.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in Process Safety and HSE Engineering, including the design and review of Fire & Gas Detection Systems, Process Safety Studies, Consequence Modelling, Layout Safety Reviews, Explosion and Fire Risk Assessments, Regulatory Compliance, and EPC project execution, with experience supporting both brownfield and greenfield facilities in Canada considered highly desirable.
This role will ensure compliance with applicable Canadian regulations, industry codes and standards, and company requirements, while supporting project execution throughout all stages, from conceptual design through commissioning and operations.
? Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Process Safety and Loss Prevention engineering activities on EPC projects from concept development through commissioning and start-up.
- Develop and review Fire & Gas Detection philosophies, Fire Protection philosophies, Hazardous Area Classification studies, Fire Water System designs, and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) philosophies.
- Plan, facilitate, and document HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, PSSR, What-If, Bowtie, and other Process Safety studies.
- Perform and supervise Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), consequence modeling, explosion analysis, fire radiation studies, toxic release assessments, and risk evaluations using recognized industry software.
- Develop Fire & Gas detector mapping, coverage assessments, voting logic strategies, and system integration requirements.
- Review facility layouts, equipment spacing, occupied buildings,
escape routes, muster areas, and passive fire protection requirements to ensure regulatory and safety compliance.
- Prepare and review technical specifications, datasheets, engineering calculations, reports, and scope of work documents related to Process Safety and Fire Protection systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian regulations, including Alberta and British Columbia Occupational Health and Safety legislation, CSA standards, NFPA standards, API Recommended Practices, ASME requirements, and client engineering standards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate HSE and Process Safety engineers.
- Support proposal development, bid evaluations, project risk reviews, constructability reviews, and client presentations.
- Interface with clients, regulatory agencies, equipment vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve technical issues and ensure project objectives are achieved.
- Participate in design reviews, model reviews, field inspections, construction support activities, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up support.
- Review Management of Change (MOC) documentation and assess impacts on Process Safety and facility risk profiles.
- Support development and implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM) programs and associated performance indicators.
- Provide technical support during incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development.
- Undertake site visits, safety assessments, and field surveys as required for brownfield and operating facilities.
✅ Mandatory Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Fire Protection Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university. A Master’s degree in Process Safety, Risk Management, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered and in good standing with APEGA (Alberta). Registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) is required, or the ability to obtain registration within six months of employment.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in Process Safety, HSE Engineering, Fire Protection, and/or Loss Prevention within the Oil & Gas, Energy, Petrochemical, LNG, Power Generation, Industrial, or EPC sectors.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Process Safety Management (PSM), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Fire & Gas Detection System Design, Hazard Identification (HAZID), Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Bowtie Analysis, SIL Classification and Verification, Emergency Response Planning, and Risk Assessment.
- Solid capabilities in team leadership, technical writing, client interface, and multidisciplinary coordination, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of applicable Canadian regulations, industry codes and standards, and engineering practices relevant to Process Safety, Fire Protection, HSE, and Loss Prevention.
