Position Summary:

The HSSE Coordinator provides field-level assurance that high-risk work is properly controlled and that emergency response capability is in place before work begins. Working directly in active shipyard and construction environments, this role verifies critical controls, supports supervisors and trades, and ensures rescue readiness, equipment integrity, and regulatory compliance are maintained in real time.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

Field Operations & Control Verification

- Verify critical controls prior to work commencing (confined space, hot work, lifting, work at heights, mobile equipment).
- Conduct daily field inspections and intervene on developing hazards.
- Confirm permits, tags, and procedures accurately reflect actual work conditions.
- Complete vessel hazard assessments and maintain hazard boards.
- Support incident investigations and corrective action follow-up.

Emergency Response & Rescue Readiness

- Act as field liaison to the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
- Confirm rescue plans and equipment are in place prior to high-risk work.
- Identify gaps in emergency coverage, access, or responder availability and escalate.




- Participate in drills and support coordination during emergency events.

Safety Equipment Management

- Inspect and maintain emergency and rescue equipment (tripods, retrieval systems, gas monitors, SCBA, fire protection equipment).
- Calibrate and bump test gas detection equipment.
- Remove defective equipment from service and coordinate repair or replacement.
- Maintain inspection, certification, and inventory records for safety-critical equipment.

Training & Workforce Support

- Deliver or coordinate orientations and safety training (PPE, WHMIS, fall protection, confined space, respirators).
- Perform respirator fit testing and track certification validity.
- Support toolbox talks, field-level risk assessments, and safety stand-downs.
- Provide practical safety guidance to supervisors and workers.

Compliance & Documentation

- Maintain permits, inspection records, and training documentation.
- Support JHSC inspections and follow-up actions.
- Manage SDS system and regulatory postings. • Assist with environmental spill response coordination and reporting as required.

Requirements:

Education:

- Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred.

Experience:

- 3–5 years’ experience in shipyard, marine, construction, mining, or heavy industrial environments.




- Direct experience working around trades, equipment operations, and high-risk activities.
- Experience supporting confined space, hot work, lifting, or emergency response programs.

Licences/Certifications:

- NCSO, CHSC, or working toward CRSP considered an asset.
- Confined Space and/or Emergency Response training considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence.

Working Conditions:

- Primarily field-based in active industrial and marine environments.
- Exposure to weather, noise, and physical industrial conditions.
- May require participation in emergency response activities and drills.
