Internship: Mechanical Engineering

(Eighteen Months Contract)

About The Job The CSIR has an Internship chance in the Mandela Mining Precinct, which is hosted within the CSIR Business Excellence and Integration portfolio. The incumbent will be seconded from the Mandela Mining Precinct to Mining Cluster. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through operational and project-based work under the guidance of management and engineers within cross-functional teams.

This position is based in Johannesburg.

Key Responsibilities

- Work as part of the operational and maintenance teams of the CSIR Mining Laboratories under the supervision of the Senior Engineer and Laboratory Manager.
- Gain first-hand knowledge and experience in operational processes of CSIR facilities providing testing and training services to the mining industry, by working as part of the laboratory operational teams.




- Gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the maintenance function of the laboratories by working as part of the maintenance team.
- Identify opportunities for improvements to processes and/or equipment and undertake a project to develop and implement approved improvement initiatives for the Mining Laboratories.
- Prepare reports and presentations to share work outcomes with the management team;
- Present results when required;
- Perform general administrative tasks as assigned by the team leader.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Good attention to details;

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

- A National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- A Bachelor of Technology or bachelor¿s degree in mechanical engineering will be an added advantage.
- Experience in mechanical testing of metallic materials and/or components would be an added advantage.
- Experience in underground mining operations would be an added advantage.
- The following skills are required;
- Self-motivated and a team player;
- Analytical, numerical, methodical, innovative and results driven;
- Willingness to learn and work under pressure;
- Administrative skills (planning, coordinating and structured work routines);
- Pro-active and focused;

- Ability to prioritise and have a good sense of urgency and accuracy;




- Must have clear/no criminal record;
- All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
