About Penalta
Penalta is an established general contractor delivering small to mid-sized commercial, institutional, retail, and residential projects across the GTA. Our work includes ground-up new builds, tenant fit-outs, retrofit work, and civil/precast projects, supported by a hands-on approach to project delivery and a strong reputation with our subcontractor partners.
The Role
We're looking for a Junior Estimator to support our estimating team. This role combines the coordination and administrative side of bid management with hands-on estimating work at a junior level. You'll be the go-to person for keeping the bid process organized and moving, while also contributing directly to estimates, takeoffs, and trade pricing.
You'll bring a solid understanding of construction drawings, estimating methodology, and how bids come together. When the estimating team gives you a task, whether it's research, a takeoff, a subcontractor follow-up, or pulling together documentation, you take it and run with it.
You'll also be a key point of contact with our subtrades and suppliers. We want someone who can build and maintain strong subcontractor relationships, represent Penalta professionally, and become the person our trades want to work with. Over time, this role grows into a full Estimator position as your responsibilities expand.
What You Will Do
Bid Coordination & Administration
- Organize and maintain tender documents, drawings, specifications, and addenda to ensure the estimating team has complete and current information for each bid.
- Coordinate subtrade and supplier outreach during bid periods, distributing bid invitations, tracking responses, and following up on outstanding pricing by phone and email.
- Receive, log, and organize incoming trade quotes, flagging scope gaps, exclusions, or inconsistencies for review.
- Maintain and update bid logs to track all active tenders, deadlines, subcontractor outreach status, and outstanding items.
- Prepare and assemble bid packages for internal review, including trade comparisons, inclusions/exclusions, assumptions, and supporting documentation.
- Compile and maintain historical cost data, pricing records, and vendor contact information to support future estimates.
- Conduct research and gather information as needed to support the estimating team's decision-making.
Estimating Support
- Perform quantity takeoffs from architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings using Bluebeam and Excel.
- Assist with preparing cost estimates by incorporating labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
- Review and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations for scope coverage, pricing accuracy, and completeness.
- Support the estimating team in preparing competitive bids for public and private sector projects.
- Participate in pre-tender site visits to assess site conditions, access, geotechnical considerations, and project-specific requirements.
- Coordinate with project management and site teams during post-award handoff to ensure a smooth transition from estimate to execution.
Subcontractor Relationships
- Build and maintain ongoing, professional relationships with subcontractors and suppliers across the GTA.
- Negotiate competitive pricing with subcontractors while fostering long-term partnerships that benefit Penalta's positioning.
- Represent the estimating team in all subcontractor interactions with professionalism, discretion, and strong communication.
What You Bring
- 3 to 5 years of construction or estimating experience with a solid understanding of how projects are priced and built.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings without needing to be taught. Drawing literacy is foundational to this role.
- Working knowledge of construction methodology, sequencing, and trade coordination. You understand how things go together on-site and how that informs your estimate.
- Familiarity with geotechnical considerations, soil conditions, and site work as they relate to foundations and civil scopes.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam, Excel, and ideally PlanSwift, or similar estimating and project management tools.
- Understanding of construction and estimating terminology and methodology. You speak the language.
- Existing relationships with subtrades and suppliers in the GTA market are a strong asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in English is required. You'll be on the phone with subcontractors daily, and your ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and confidently is essential.
- A personable, social, and professional- demeanor. You'll be the face of our estimating team with our trades, and how you carry yourself matters.
- Self-directed and resourceful. When you're given a task, you take ownership of it. You ask smart questions upfront and then execute without needing constant direction.
- Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive project and pricing information.
What Makes This Role Different This role gives you the best of both worlds. You'll handle the coordination and administration that keeps the bid process running smoothly, and you'll contribute directly to estimates at a junior level. You're not stuck doing one or the other.
At Penalta, the estimating team isn't just pricing jobs. They're building the subcontractor relationships that make our bids competitive. We want our Junior Estimator to be the person subcontractors want to work with, the person they pick up the phone for.
Our team is small, our project mix is diverse, and you'll have direct exposure to leadership and decision-making. There is a explicit growth path from Junior Estimator to Estimator as your responsibilities and autonomy expand.
