Job Overview The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily operation of JWMCSS food and meal service programs by assisting with the preparation of hot and frozen meals for Meals on Wheels routes and onsite programs, following client-specific meal and dietary requirements, and helping maintain clean, safe and organized kitchen and dining areas.
Working closely with kitchen staff, drivers, volunteers and program staff, the Kitchen Assistant ensures that meals and supplies are prepared accurately, safely and on time.
Duties
- Review client information, route books and daily requirements.
- Prepare, portion, label, package and organize hot and frozen meals, soups and desserts.
- Assemble meal bags and route supplies for driver pickup.
- Support meal service for onsite programs and events.
- Coordinate with kitchen staff, drivers, volunteers and program staff.
- Prepare service areas, distribute meals and maintain organized supplies.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen, dining areas, equipment and storage spaces.
- Wash dishes, complete kitchen laundry and perform general kitchen duties.
Quality and Risk Management
- Follow dietary, food-safety, sanitation and infection-prevention requirements.
- Ensure meals, labels, portions and supplies are accurate and safely handled..
- Maintain clean, organized work areas and sanitize surfaces, equipment and carts.
- Protect client dignity, confidentiality and safety.
Health & Safety
- Follow health, food-safety and infection-control procedures.
- Use PPE, proper hand hygiene and protected lifting techniques.
- Work safely around equipment, food, heat, allergens and cleaning products.
- Keep areas clear and report hazards, injuries or unsafe conditions.
- Use kitchen equipment only as authorized.
Qualifications
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent is an asset.
- Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate maintained according to certification renewal requirements.
- Training in food safety, infection prevention and control, or workplace health and safety is an asset.
- One to two years of experience in food service, meal preparation, kitchen support, hospitality, community services or a related environment is an asset.
- Experience serving older adults, persons with disabilities or individuals with dietary requirements is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Working Conditions
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

- Exposure to hot and cold foods, heated equipment, steam, wet surfaces, cleaning products and food allergens.
