Job Summary and Requirements The Legal Counsel (Yukon Courts) is responsible for performing solicitor duties for the Yukon Courts and the judiciary. As in-house legal counsel, this position works independently of lawyers in executive and legislative branches of government and public practice and is the authority in the law surrounding court administration and judicial independence. The incumbent is also engaged by the judiciary in procedural and substantive issues in diverse areas of the law and in matters related to the discharge of judicial duties under federal and territorial statutes.

The workload is diverse,



and files may be groundbreaking, complex, and concerned with conflicting legal principles. This position reports to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Chief Judge of the Territorial Court, and administratively to the Director, Court Services. It works with one other Legal Counsel (Yukon Courts) to provide legal support to Yukon Courts and the judiciary.

The position supervises the work of two Senior Judicial Assistants and articling and summer students, as required.

Qualifications Experience in the practice of law in the areas of Litigation and/or Solicitor work Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Yukon or eligibility for admission to the Law Society of Yukon Bilingual – English and French will be considered an asset Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability Understanding of the history of Yukon First Nations and the ongoing process of reconciliation Knowledge of and experience working within criminal law Excellent written and oral communication skills Understanding of judicial independence Professionalism, including tact and diplomacy Analytical and problem-solving skills Additional Information

Conditions of Employment: Current member in valuable standing of the Law Society of Yukon; or be currently eligible for admission in the Law Society of Yukon Security clearance Job Requirements Occasional travel in and out-of-territory
