The Team The Quality Engineering team partners with Product Design and Development to influence engineering decisions that uphold consumer, regulatory, and Mattel expectations for quality, safety, and reliability. The team also works with global Quality and Manufacturing partners to support pre-production development and resolve post-production issues using data-driven decision-making.
The Opportunity
Mattel is seeking a Manager, Quality Engineering to lead a team of Quality Engineers supporting Global Brand Teams and product development programs.
This role provides both people and technical leadership to ensure quality, safety, regulatory compliance, reliability, and consumer expectations are integrated throughout the product development lifecycle. The Manager will partner with Marketing, Design, Product Development, R&D;, Product Safety, Regulatory Compliance, Quality Data Analytics, laboratories, Manufacturing, and global Quality teams.
The Manager is responsible for team performance and development, resource planning, technical execution, and quality outcomes while shaping Quality Engineering strategies and influencing cross-functional decisions.
What Your Impact Will Be
Strategy & Quality Leadership
- Shape and execute Quality Engineering strategies across assigned brands, product categories, or functional areas.
- Ensure consistent execution of product quality, safety, reliability, risk management, and regulatory requirements throughout product development.
- Maintain knowledge of global toy and consumer product regulations, standards, emerging requirements, and industry best practices.
- Identify systemic product and process risks and partner cross-functionally to develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Apply Quality Engineering expertise and lessons learned to improve organizational practices and processes.
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop Quality Engineers, building capability in quality systems, regulatory requirements, technical problem-solving, risk management, data analysis, and decision-making.
- Establish clear goals, priorities, expectations, and accountability aligned with business objectives.
- Provide ongoing coaching, performance management, career development, mentoring, and technical guidance.
- Assess resource needs and allocate engineering support based on product complexity, risk, workload, and business priorities.
- Support hiring, onboarding, succession planning, development, and retention of Quality Engineering talent.
- Foster a culture of technical curiosity, collaboration, accountability, continuous learning, and appropriate escalation of quality and safety concerns.
Cross-Functional Influence
- Build solid partnerships across Marketing, Design, Product Development, Product Safety, Regulatory Compliance, Analytics, Play Labs, Manufacturing, laboratories, and other global teams.
- Ensure Quality Engineering is engaged throughout product development to influence decisions affecting quality, safety, compliance, reliability,
and consumer satisfaction.
- Anticipate downstream risks and impacts and drive appropriate cross-functional engagement and resolution.
- Influence teams and leaders to make balanced, risk-based decisions while maintaining consumer safety and regulatory compliance.
- Provide Quality Engineering leadership during significant product quality, safety, manufacturing, compliance, and post-market issues.
- Ensure significant risks are appropriately communicated and escalated.
Data, Technical & Engineering Excellence
- Promote objective, data-driven decision-making and ensure appropriate collection, analysis, and interpretation of quality and product performance data.
- Review technical analyses and recommendations for complex or higher-risk issues and ensure conclusions are technically sound and documented.
- Use product testing, consumer complaints, returns, Quality Data Analytics, Play Lab findings, and manufacturing performance to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Establish and monitor appropriate KPIs and quality metrics and ensure significant findings result in action.
- Provide technical leadership for product investigations, root cause analysis, engineering studies, sampling strategies, risk assessments, verification, and validation.
- Ensure appropriate application of problem-solving and risk-management tools including Fishbone, 5-Why, FMEA, FTA, and PHA.
- Provide oversight for Product Requirement Documents (PRDs), Primary Concerns Documents (PCDs), testing strategies, and Quality Engineering documentation.
- Ensure product concepts, play patterns, foreseeable use and misuse, consumer interactions, and identified risks are translated into effective testing and verification strategies.
- Partner with internal and third-party laboratories to ensure testing addresses regulatory requirements, identified risks, and product performance expectations.
- Ensure investigations and corrective actions are technically sound, appropriately documented, and completed in a timely manner.
- Provide guidance on statistical analysis, sampling plans, engineering studies, and quality data.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Quality Management System (QMS) processes and requirements.
Product Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Incorporate product knowledge, foreseeable consumer use, and play patterns into quality decisions and risk assessments.
- Use quality data, consumer feedback, testing, returns, manufacturing performance, and post-market information to identify opportunities to improve quality, reliability, durability, and consumer satisfaction.
- Lead or support investigation and resolution of significant post-market quality and safety issues.
- Ensure lessons learned from consumer and field performance are incorporated into current and future product development.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives that enhance the effectiveness, consistency, scalability, and efficiency of Quality Engineering practices while maintaining regulatory and QMS compliance.
- Promote best practices and use KPIs, quality metrics, benchmarking, and lessons learned to drive improvement.

Experience, Education & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Electrical, Mechanical, Materials Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- 6+ years of progressive experience in product development, product engineering, manufacturing, or quality, preferably within toys, children's products, or consumer products.
- Experience leading engineers, technical teams, or significant cross-functional programs; formal people-management experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of global toy and consumer product safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Experience supporting product development from concept through production and post-market.
- Knowledge of risk management and problem-solving tools including FMEA, FTA, PHA, root cause analysis, statistical analysis, process mapping, sampling methodologies, and engineering studies.
- Experience interpreting quality and product performance data to support engineering decisions.
- Experience working with internal and/or third-party testing laboratories, global manufacturing teams, suppliers, and product development organizations.
- Knowledge of Human Factors/Usability Engineering principles for toys or consumer products preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management tools, and statistical software such as Minitab.
