Family Centre Coordinator (Term)

COMPENSATION: Non-Union Hourly $35.63 per hour
HOURS: 6.0 hours per day, five days per week
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the School Principal, the Family Centre Coordinator will operate the Family Centre and support the school community. The Centre is a hub for pre-school families to meet, learn and access community resources. This position supports the strategic actions of the Multi-Year Strategic Plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
As the Family Centre Coordinator, your responsibilities and duties will include:
- Operating the Centre where parents/caregivers can participate with their infants and preschoolers in child-centered
activities.
- Welcoming families and acting as a support and resource.
- Working with the Family Centre Assistant to organize and participate in daily activities at the Centre.
- Supporting outreach activities to promote literacy, numeracy, community involvement and participation at the Centre and
within the school. (including preparing a newsletter)
- Providing parents with functional understanding of early child development, effective parenting skills and nutrition.
- Preparation and Delivery of the Roots of Empathy program.
- Encouraging inter-agency collaboration and supports.
- Coordinating delivery of programs at the Centre and maintaining lending resources.
- Creating strong links between family, community and school.
- Working collaboratively with school, other family centres, a parent support group, and the coalition.
- Monitoring budget and maintaining required records; applying for funding to granting agencies.
- Working with and supervising volunteers and staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE):
- Early Childhood Certificate level 2 – 3 or related area of post-secondary education required.
- Experience in parent education, community leadership, early childhood and literacy development including working closely
with families and school community.
- Support the development of young children from birth to age five through an effective Early Years program with emphasis
on social skills, language development, early literacy and numeracy combined with an emphasis on “healthy living” habits.
- Understanding of cross-cultural Aboriginal issues and perspectives.
- Ability to work with and be respectful of a diverse and multicultural community.
- Knowledge or experience working with low-income families, single parent families and/or young parents is preferred.
- Ability to work as an effective team member, including in the implementation of programs.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to problem solve and deal with difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to connect with the community and communicate effectively about Centre resources and supports.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills, French preferred and any additional languages
would be an asset.
- Ability to maintain and develop a program consistent with school and divisional philosophies.
- Positive computer skills.
- Facilitator training in or willingness to get training for Alphabet Soup, Ready for School, Nobody’s Perfect, Mother Goose or
Rock and Read programs or similar programs would be preferred. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check,
including Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Clear report from the Child Abuse Registry.
- Respect In School or equivalent training is required.
- First Aid and CPR training completed within 90 working days.
- Review and comply with Divisional policies and guidelines.
- Continued employment is subject to maintaining legal eligibility to work in Canada.
- Valid Manitoba Driver’s License, current Driver’s Abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
