SMI Automation (Canada) Inc. is a leading designer and builder of custom automation systems, robotics, and advanced manufacturing equipment serving the transportation, oil & gas, and mining sectors. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer / Senior Mechanical Designer to develop safe, reliable, and innovative custom automation machinery from initial concept through manufacturing and commissioning.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will be involved with the development of system layouts and design specifications for factory automation solutions, including special purpose machinery, fixtures, and gauges.

Job Duties

Concept development and machine design:

- Develop automation concepts, system layouts, and detailed mechanical designs based on customer specifications, statements of work, cycle-time requirements, and project constraints.
- Design robotic cells, assembly equipment, material-handling systems, tooling, fixtures, gauges, guarding, and special-purpose machinery.
- Evaluate alternative concepts and recommend solutions based on functionality, safety, reliability, cost, schedule, and technical risk.
- Participate in internal and customer design reviews from initial concept through final approval.

Engineering calculations: · Perform engineering calculations for loads, forces, torque, speed, acceleration, deflection, power, structural capacity, and component life.

· Complete tolerance stack-up analyses and verify fits, clearances, alignment, and assembly requirements.

· Validate component selections and document critical design assumptions.

Component selection:

· Select and size motors, gearboxes, bearings, linear guides, ball screws, servo actuators, pneumatic cylinders, hydraulic components, clamps, sensors, and related automation hardware.

· Work with suppliers to evaluate technical suitability, availability, lead time, cost, and maintainability.

· Identify long-lead and technically critical components early in the project.

Machine safety and risk assessment:

· Incorporate machine guarding, safe access, ergonomics, and mechanical risk-reduction measures into all equipment designs.





· Participate in machine risk assessments and implement assigned mechanical safety measures.

· Collaborate with Controls Engineering to define guarding, gates, interlocks, safety devices, access requirements, and safe operating conditions.

· Ensure designs comply with applicable legislation, customer specifications, and machine-safety standards.

General:

· Prepare and maintain accurate as-built drawings, bills of materials, and engineering change documentation

· Process engineering changes using established revision-control and approval procedures.

- Work to continuously improve the methods utilized within the mechanical engineering division, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost.
- Work in a team environment with Sales, Estimating, Project Management, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Management to assist in the successful execution of projects.
- Attend internal kickoff meetings (line up meetings) for new projects to receive an understanding of the scope of the project.
- Liaison with vendors for technical information and specifications.
- Completion of projects; according to established schedules, consistent with specific quality and legislation standards.
- Consultation with controls engineering and manufacturing divisions during the mechanical design process to design automation solutions, which are built efficiently and perform their intended function safely and reliably.
- Participate in post-project review meetings to compare what was quoted against the completed project.
- Some travel will be required.
- Hours of work are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday and due to the nature of this position extra hours outside of the regular office hours scheduled will be required.

Qualifications: · Minimum 10 years of mechanical design experience, including at least five years designing custom automation equipment, special-purpose machinery, robotic cells, or related industrial equipment. Strong computer, problem solving, and organizational skills.





- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to meet goals and tight deadlines.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a college diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design Technology, or a related discipline.
- Expert with SolidWorks.
- Must have technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and factory automation with the ability to read engineering drawings using GD&T.;
- Proficient with pneumatic and servo actuators.
- Experience with hydraulic systems
- Experience with Siemens Process Simulate, Robot Master or other types of 3D simulation software would be considered an asset.
