As a Mechanical Engineering Technician at Miru, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the production and development of our innovative electrochromic window product. This role is essential to ensure the preventative and reactive maintenance of our R&D; facility, optimizing operational efficiency and productivity. You’ll serve as the subject matter expert on critical facility equipment, driving collaboration, effective project management, and mentorship within the organization.

Reporting to the Engineering Operations Lead and collaborating closely with our R&D; and production teams, you’ll contribute to enhancing the functionality of Miru’s innovation center. As we expand, you’ll play an active role in installing, commissioning and maintaining new systems, ensuring seamless integration and performance across both locations. Your expertise will be key to ensuring our building systems are running at peak performance and that project timelines are met effectively.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ownership of the Maintenance Program and Improvement of Building Systems and Equipment
- Perform preventative and reactive maintenance on building systems and plant equipment to support R&D; and manufacturing operations.
- Act as a subject matter expert for critical equipment, including HVAC systems, gloveboxes, and gas systems (air, nitrogen, argon, CO2).
- Collaborate with stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, schedule maintenance, and minimize downtime.
- Diagnose, recommend, and implement improvements for integrated equipment systems.
- Oversee maintenance scheduling, reporting systems and communicate maintenance events to stakeholders.
- Review design drawings, repair manuals,
and parts catalogs to support equipment maintenance needs.
- Source and manage parts, supplies, and equipment necessary for maintenance and repairs.
- Foster effective relationships with contractors, consultants, and suppliers to ensure cost-effective solutions.
Project Management:
- Lead and execute projects focused on enhancing the maintainability of building systems and equipment.
- Research requirements for new systems and equipment to meet evolving R&D; needs.
- Evaluate designs, proposals, and supplier quotes to ensure alignment with project objectives.
- Manage installation, testing, and commissioning of complex building systems, including HVAC, gloveboxes, and other specialized laboratory equipment.
- Define and manage project scope, objectives, deliverables, and milestones for multidisciplinary projects.
ABOUT YOU:
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technologist, Facilities Management, or a related field.
- 6+ years of hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, or commissioning mechanical systems and equipment in an industrial, laboratory, manufacturing, or similar technical environment.
- Experience working with laboratory or controlled-environment equipment, such as gloveboxes, HVAC systems, gas systems, ovens, gantries, and custom tools, or similar specialized equipment.
- Experience working closely with engineers, laboratory personnel, and R&D; teams to troubleshoot mechanical and laboratory equipment issues, investigate root causes of equipment failures, develop corrective actions, and support the maintenance, modification, and improvement of specialized facility systems.
- Experience working with chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with WHMIS 2015 and applicable workplace safety procedures.
- Experience working safely with electrical systems, gas systems, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures,
with relevant safety training and awareness.
- Experience with physical fabrication and workshop practices, including the safe and effective use of hand tools and power tools such as drill presses, mitre saws, angle grinders, jigsaws, and cordless drills.
Competencies:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and adept at coordinating across teams.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritize effectively.
- Experience in mentoring and team development is a plus.
- Skilled in reviewing design documents and technical manuals, and familiar with maintenance reporting systems.
- Exposure to CAD software, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, with the ability to review and interpret CAD drawings, prepare basic technical documentation, and support the use of digital fabrication equipment, including 3D printers and laser cutters.
- Quality & Compliance: Develop a thorough understanding of quality assurance standards and OHSE policies, with an emphasis on proactive safety leadership in maintenance activities.
- Six Sigma training or demonstrated experience applying continuous improvement and process optimization principles in a manufacturing, R&D;, or technical environment.
- Forklift certification and experience operating powered industrial equipment in a workplace setting.
- Confined space training and knowledge of confined space entry procedures and hazards.

- This position requires full-time, in-office presence at our Olympic Village locations.
- Flexibility to occasionally work early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed

Compensation: The posted range for this position is 80,000 CAD. In addition to base salary, you will be eligible for our bonus program, stock options, 4+ paid weeks off/year and extended health benefits after 3 months of service.
