Job Summary
Reporting to the Waterworks Supervisor, assist with the operation and maintenance of the City of Markham water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance. Conducts utility locate services for residential and commercial customers including water, wastewater, storm, streetlights and traffic signals underground infrastructure. Provide assistance through a supporting role in the maintenance and immediate repair of the overall water/wastewater and stormwater infrastructure system and assets; provide associated customer service, general labour and equipment maintenance.

Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform locate services for residential and commercial customers including water, wastewater, storm, streetlights and traffic signals underground infrastructure assets for both, regular and emergency requests. Operates various electromagnetic locating equipment including receiver and transmitters designed to assist in the locating and verifying of underground infrastructure. Creates digital locate sketches through computer applications, computerized management systems (EAM Lucity) and prepare documentation verifying marked underground infrastructure. Mark lines using colour flags and / or paint that are specified for each utility asset class.
- Review and verify City’s owned infrastructure records regarding excavation locations, and construction plans to determine the location of the infrastructure.
- Perform manual labour, generally as part of a crew, to perform routine non-licensed water and wastewater operator required activities waterworks maintenance/repair work as assigned.
- May participate in the Waterworks Operation & Maintenance Standby rotation as assigned (24 hour, 7 days/ week rotation).
- Perform miscellaneous shop duties, including maintenance of facilities, equipment and vehicles to ensure optimal performance and safe working conditions, including assisting sanitary and storm CCTV and/or flushing, valve exercising, sod restoration, hydrant snow shoveling, etc.
- May provide after hours services as required, including locates, immediate repairs and/or protection measures to ensure public health and safety as well as system integrity.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education And Experience Required
- Minimum high school diploma.
- Completion of the Damage Prevention Technician Program by the Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA)
- Completion of the Ontario One Call’s Professional Locate Administrator Course (PLAC).
- Minimum Class G driver's licence; DZ preferred.
Must have a clean driver's abstract as approved by the City of Markham and be able to upgrade to a DZ licence. As a condition of employment you will required to provide a satisfactory drivers abstract.
- Demonstrated 1-3 years of experience and/or technical skills in utility locates for streetlights, traffic signals, and survey utility.
- Ability to skillfully operate and perform routine maintenance and inspections on a full range of vehicles, equipment and tools required for the duties as described above.
- Must be physically able to perform bona fide duties of the job including heavy lifting, work outdoors and independently throughout the year.
- Ability to distinguish colours for marked utilities.
- Must be willing and available for overtime and able to work after hours and holidays as directed and required.
- Demonstrated experience in municipal Water/Wastewater/Storm Works, Streetlights and Traffic Signal location, and municipal underground assets operations and maintenance.
- Ability to operate various electromagnetic locating equipment including receiver and transmitters designed to assist in the locating and verifying of underground infrastructure.
- Experience in completing digital locate sketches through computer applications, computerized management systems and prepare documentation verifying marked underground infrastructure.
- Demonstrated understanding of municipal infrastructure drawings as it applies to construction plans to determine the location of the infrastructure.
