Job Summary

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is currently seeking a qualified instructor to teach INTD 218 – Creating a Design Startup within the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media in the Fall 2026 semester. We currently have one in-person section available; the section is scheduled for Mondays, 3:25pm to 6:15pm.

Designing great experiences is one thing, delivering them is another. This course aims to equip designers with the tools and methods to create their own product development companies. Participants will learn how to develop and evaluate product/service concepts, establish a rapid iterative prototyping process and use the human-centered design process to create and test minimum viable versions of their products.

The project-based course will focus on using contemporary qualified methodologies to help students bring their product concepts to market in meaningful ways.

Course outlines and guidance from regular faculty are provided to successful candidates.

Required Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE + EDUCATION

- A terminal degree (MFA, MDes, PhD, or equivalent) or an equivalent combination of professional experience (3 years of practice in a supervisory, leadership, or mentorship capacity).
- Any relevant professional development or training should be included in the candidates CV.

EXPERIENCE

- 1 year of teaching experience at the post-secondary level or equivalent in design or supervisory / mentorship experience of junior design practitioners.
- 5 years of professional experience in the field of UX Design, preferably with experience in leadership role in design.




- Experience with creating or working with startups.

SKILLS

- Demonstrated expertise in the discipline (Design research and practice) – a strong portfolio of work demonstrating creative and conceptual rigor, supported by professional design experience.
- Evidence of scholarly, creative, or professional contributions to the field through research, publications, teaching, or cutting-edge practices.
- Technical proficiency in techniques, processes, digital tools, relevant to Interaction Design and the UX/UI Design practise, specifically using 3D modeling software and XR/VR/AR Technology.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and openness to team-teaching.
- Fluency in contemporary Design practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic, and technical demands of the discipline.
- Ability to effectively engage students in multicultural and multilingual classrooms.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching through an awareness of inclusive, anti-racist, and decolonial pedagogies.
- Ability to deliver practice-based Design curriculum at the intersection between research, practice, and theory.
- Ability to center ethical practice in curriculum delivery, including addressing the cultural, socio/political, and ecological contexts and considerations of the work.
