Under general direction, the Supervisor, Transit Operations is a first level leadership position with a focus on safety and oversight of transit services and direct oversight of Transit Operators, Hostlers, Shelter Maintenance Labourers, and Shelter Maintenance Technicians. This role is also responsible for providing customer service to the public, responding to all incidents, and carrying out other duties as required in the provision of transit service. Lead, mentor, coordinate, schedule Transit Operators, and direct daily activities of Transit personnel, bringing any appropriate employment matters to the attention of the Assistant Manager, Transit Operations/Assistant Manager, Transit Planning, and/or delegate.

Oversee transit operations during shift, which include verifying that processes and procedures are consistently applied and that equipment and employee requirements are fulfilled. Manage daily service changes on the road and respond to transportation requests, issues, and concerns. Respond to all incidents immediately and conduct incident investigations as required.

Conduct route testing and assessments as needed.



Perform routine foot patrols at terminals and other facilities. Accurately record all relevant service-related impacts including, but not limited to, passenger counts, public information, service frequencies, changing travel patterns and demands, routing recommendations, service levels, placement of shelters, stops, and signs for service planning and improvements.

Ensure timely and accurate completion of reports to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulations. Collect data and prepare daily summaries on all activities and elevate concerning operator and service-related complaints and compliments. Knowledge of transit systems, fare structures, collective agreements, and operational policies and procedures.

Knowledge of radio and telephone equipment and radio communication procedures. Sound knowledge of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo service area with good knowledge of street names and major landmarks including health, rehabilitation, nursing, and special care facilities. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills along with experience in dealing with public inquiries.

Knowledge of radio, telephone equipment, and control centre software. Ability to empower people and navigate situations involving rapid change, shifting priorities, and/or simultaneous demands. Strong customer service skills and experience in dealing with public enquiries.

Good knowledge of computers with working knowledge in Windows and Microsoft Office.

High School

Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Two (2)



years of experience in a public transit operations environment is required. One (1) year of experience in a leadership role with experience as a leader in a unionized environment considered an asset.

Experience operating heavy equipment (Class 1, 2 or 3) and knowledge of National Safety Code Regulations considered an asset. A valid Q endorsement is considered an asset. Completed course work in collision/incident investigation from a recognized institute is considered an asset.

Valid First

Aid/CPR Certificate is an asset. Completion of a defensive driving course is an asset.

Experience working in a public sector setting with unionized and non-unionized employees considered an asset. Submission of a Criminal Record Check. A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.

A valid Class Two (2) Operator’s Licence with Q endorsement is considered an asset. Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends. As an employee of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the incumbent is responsible for understanding and actively participating in the RMWB’s health and safety management system, and complying with all policies, practices, and procedures.
