Awake-Overnight House Assistant
L’Arche Calgary L’Arche Calgary is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and dedicated Awake-Overnight House Assistant to join our community. This role provides active overnight support to adults with developmental disabilities while helping maintain a safe, welcoming, clean, and comfortable home environment.
The Awake-Overnight House Assistant is expected to remain awake and alert throughout the entire overnight shift and be ready to respond to the needs of individuals and any emergencies that may arise.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide respectful, person-centred support to adults with developmental disabilities, including assistance with personal care as required.
- Remain awake, alert, and actively engaged throughout the entire overnight shift.
- Respond appropriately to the verbal and non-verbal needs, wishes, and preferences of individuals.
- Support individuals in achieving their personal goals and follow individualized programs and Behaviour Support Plans, where applicable.
- Assist with the safe storage and administration of medications in accordance with L’Arche Calgary policies and procedures.
- Monitor and respond to changes in individuals' health, behaviour, or well-being and complete appropriate documentation and reporting.
- Support dietary needs, safe food handling, and the proper use of assistive devices.
- Maintain a protected, clean, comfortable, and welcoming home through overnight household and cleaning responsibilities.
- Be prepared to respond appropriately to emergencies, including medical emergencies, fires, and power outages.
- Maintain accurate progress notes, records, and other required documentation.
- Communicate respectfully and effectively with individuals, families, guardians,
professionals, team members, and community representatives.
- Participate in required orientation, training, formation, fire drills, and other L’Arche Calgary activities as required.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience supporting persons with developmental disabilities, including providing personal care, is preferred.
- Ability to work independently during overnight hours while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
- Professional, respectful, dependable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to support individuals in making choices, developing independence, and maintaining their health and well-being.
- Standard First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain it.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training or equivalent, or willingness to obtain it.
- Willingness to complete Medication Administration and other mandatory L’Arche Calgary training.
- Satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- A genuine desire to understand, support, and participate in the vision and mission of L’Arche.
