Job Purpose and Scope The Executive Co-Director (Funding & Programs) is the most senior MSYK employee, primarily responsible for the planning, marketing, funding, forming of strategic direction, and implementation of the mandate of MSYK through programs. This position, in tandem with the Executive Co-Director of Operations and Membership, plays a key role in leading all strategic and operational activities, with a focus on leading the development and coordination of grant applications, implementation, evaluation and reporting, and program development, coordination, and implementation in the pursuit of furthering MSYK’s goals.
This position also assists the other Co-Director in some responsibilities as required including partnership building, overseeing MSYK commercial tenants, human resources, financial stability and growth, as well as strategic business planning. The Executive Co-Director reports to the Board of Directors.
Job Overview and Key Attributes of Successful Candidate:
- Oversee applications including: drafting, coordination, implementation, and delivery of non-operational grants (e.g. Municipal, Territorial and Federal government grants, funding from foundations, institutional bodies, private funding sources and program-related sponsorships etc.)
- Responsible for ensuring grants received apply to the development of Makerspace's membership base (ex. Subsidized workshops are free for members, but have a cost for non-members.)
- Report to the Board of Directors on status of grant applications and administration of grants received
- Experience working with small teams and leading and coordinating grant writing and program implementation, metric tracking and reporting
- Has strong English written and verbal skills
- Demonstrates understanding of the non-profit sector, especially in the northern context
Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership and Human Resources
● Hire, orient, train and supervise all employees related to program development, delivery and reporting.
● Provide comprehensive program administrative oversight and communication to the Board of Directors, including safety reporting, program operations oversight reporting, human resource reporting and records management as well as any other research, reporting, or information deemed necessary for Board operations and strategic planning;
● Furnish accurate and timely reports on programs, including budget and variance reporting on a periodic basis, as well as complete all reporting requirements for funding and sponsorships.
- Support MSYK Board Committees including primarily:
- Programs Committee;
- Governance Committee only as related to modifications or changes to policies relevant to this role;
- Finance Committee for annual budget development and audits and otherwise as requested; and
- Human Resources (HR) Committee as required.
Program Planning & Management
- Plan and deliver programs, events and initiatives that are aligned with Board-approved strategy, and MSYK mandate to ensure the organization’s operations remain relevant to members and meet the expectations of the Board, government agencies, and partners;
- Manage all administrative and financial matters and deadlines to ensure the organization is in good standing with all funders, sponsors and other stakeholders that support programming.
- Communicate and implement MSYK operational, financial, and Human Resource policies/procedures; and
- Support Board in execution of strategic plan and annual planning based on the strategic plan.
Fundraising & Sponsorship Development
- Continue to implement revenue diversification strategies through MSYK programs, in line with the MSYK Strategic Plan, secure program sponsorships and fundraising opportunities for programs.
- Secure grants funding and contributions to ensure continued delivery of MSYK programs- including but not limited to identifying funding opportunities, drafting applications, submitting applications, and overseeing administration and communications related to grant applications and grants received, completing written and financial reporting for funding when required,
- Chair the Fundraising Committee in absence of an applicable Board Director
Financial Management
- Assist Executive Co-Director of Facility Operations and Membership in financial tracking of MSYK funding as required.
- Ensure that all expenses and revenues for programs are properly recorded and tracked on Quickbooks online for program budgets.
- Complete all financial reporting required for grants, contributions and sponsorships.
Marketing and Communications
- Ensure all programs and related activities or events are well communicated and marketed to ensure participation and successful delivery.
- Assist Executive Co-Director of Facility Operations in implementing, executing, and evaluating marketing strategies particularly for MSYK programming as required
Partnership Development
- Establish, maintain and further develop effective partnerships with community members, regional Indigenous governments, organizations and businesses that strengthen program delivery and MSYK’s network of partners and supporters.
Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Familiarity with the unique opportunities in Northern Canada and Yellowknife’s community context;
- Familiarity with non-profit and social enterprise operating models
- Experience developing and delivering program delivery with creative, educational, and equitable focus;
- Experience writing and completing grant and funding proposals;
- Knowledge and understanding of government relations and advocacy;
- Experience in business management, human resource management and financial management;
- Experience with software including Stripe, Quickbooks Online, and Google Drive
- Having a valid driver’s licence is an asset
- Experience living and working in the North
- Post-Secondary Education in a relevant discipline (B.Comm, Community Development, Education, formal education in management or leadership, financial and/or program management); or 4+ years of working experience in a similar role
- 2- 3 years experience in a relevant field.
Working Conditions and Other Attributes
Physical Demands
This position requires spending long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, which can cause muscle or eye strain. You may also have to do some light lifting of supplies, equipment and materials from time to time which will require an ability to bend and squat and lift up to 40lbs without difficulty.
Environmental Conditions
This position may have to manage many projects at one time, and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of volunteers, trainees, employees and contractors. You may find the setting to be cold, hot, busy, noisy, and dusty. Excellent organizational and time and stress management skills are required.
Mental Demands
Working effectively with a variety of people including those who may be under stress can create conflict or difficult interpersonal relationships. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the need to complete tasks or projects within tight deadlines can also cause stress.
Pay: $40.00-$45.00 per hour
