Canada West Veterinary Specialists (CWVS), a privately owned and operated, multi-disciplinary emergency and specialty hospital is looking for an exceptional Veterinary Technician/Technologist (VT) to join our team.

The first veterinary specialty hospital in Metro Vancouver, CWVS is a state-of-the-art Level VECCS level 1 and VetCOT certified facility. We have 30+ veterinarians in the following disciplines: emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, and oncology. In addition to a rehabilitation department, 6 ORs, 2 isolation wards, and a newly redesigned ER, ICU, and Wards, we are equipped with 2 digital radiology suites, a new CT, and a 1.5T MRI.

This position is responsible for coordinating and performing patient discharges and performing follow up patient phone calls after discharge, primarily for hospitalized patients of the ERCC service. This role also has a strong focus on client communication and client service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols required to support patients at home (e.g. tube feeding, insulin administration).
- Develop an understanding of medical conditions, procedures and treatments performed on patients under the care of the ERCC service.
- Responsible for coordinating and communicating with the ER team (doctor and communication liaison) and ICU/Ward technician currently assigned to the patient as part of the discharge process.
- Follow instructions as outlined on the ‘Discharge Checklist’.
- Calculate, dispense, and administer medications at the direction of the doctor responsible for the case.




- Ensures that invoices have been approved by the doctor in advance of the scheduled discharge, and that any additional items dispensed or sold to client are included.
- Provides clients instructions on the care of patients at home, the timing of recheck appointments, and warnings of adverse effects of procedures or medications.
- Assists clients with transport of their pets to and/or into their vehicles if required.
- Performs follow-up phone calls with clients the day after a patient is discharged.
- Assists with hospitalized patient visits.
- As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you.
- Performs other duties as required.

- Solid desire to learn and excel within the profession.
- Excellent client communication and client service skills.
- Demonstrated computer and phone skills.
- Strong mathematics skills (drug dose calculations).
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision when necessary.
- Ability to work as part of a team.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

- Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists.

WORKING HOURS

- 5, 8-hour shifts per week: Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00 – 20:30
