Overview

We are a family looking for dedicated and compassionate home nursing care and support for our son with medical needs. Our goal is to ensure the well-being, comfort, and enjoyment of our son with the support of caregivers who believe, as we do, that within complex medical life there is room for family, friends, and fun!

Summary

Join our family as a Pediatric Home Care Nurse in our home in Kitchener. We are looking for a part-time respite nurse for our bright and engaging 9 year old son who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). He requires respite care in our home and on outings in the community for support with airway monitoring, secretion management, tube feeding, and activities of daily living.

We are offering a minimum of one 8 hour shift per week with the opportunity for up to 24 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work weekends during the day and evening. Weekend shifts range from 8am-10pm. (For example a shift might be 8am-4pm, or 12pm-10pm.) Weekday evening shifts range from 4pm-10pm. (For example a shift might be 4pm-8pm, or 4pm-10pm.) No overnight work is required. This is a perfect job for someone just starting out in nursing. Student nurses are eligible for this position.

It is also an ideal position for nurses who prefer to focus on a single client in a non-hospital/care home envrionment.

Experience with trach and vent pediatric patients is a bonus. Above all we are looking for a caring, dedicated, and enthusiastic nurse.

The successful applicant will be required to provide a vulnerable sector criminal record check before starting this position. Training and onboarding specific to for our son’s medical needs will be provided.

Responsibilities





- Provide attentive and responsive airway management - cough assist, tracheostomy and oral suctioning, tracheostomy care, home ventilation, etc.
- Administer medication and nutrition via g-tube.
- Follow all safety protocols and healthcare guidelines relevant to children with mobility challenges.
- Assist with daily activities and routines tailored to his specific needs.
- Collaborate closely with family members and other caregivers to create a positive and supportive environment.
- Engage in activities that promote development and well-being.
- Communicate effectively with family members and other caregivers about daily care and any concerns.

Qualifications

- RPN or RN qualified in Ontario, or current student in an Ontario based nursing program.
- Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities.
- Knowledge of caring for children with mobility or muscular conditions preferred.
- Compassionate, patient, and reliable.
- Ability to follow detailed care plans and instructions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Prior experience in medical or caregiving roles is advantageous.
- Ability to work independently while being part of a supportive team.
- Certification in first aid and CPR training.
