Overview
We are a family looking for dedicated and compassionate respite home care and support for our son with medical needs. Our goal is to ensure the well-being, comfort, and enjoyment of our son with the support of caregivers who believe, as we do, that within complex medical life there is room for family, friends, and fun!
Summary
Join our family as a Pediatric Respite Worker in our home in Kitchener. We are looking for a part-time respite worker for our bright and engaging 9 year old son who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). He requires respite care in our home and on outings in the community for support with airway monitoring, secretion management, tube feeding, and activities of daily living.
We are offering a minimum of one 8 hour shift per weekend with the opportunity for up to 24 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays during the day and evening. No overnight work is required. This is a perfect job for someone with a nursing, DSW, PSW, or child development background. It would provide valuable experience for students in nursing, respiratory therapy, or other health care areas.
Experience with trach and vent pediatric patients is a bonus. Above all we are looking for a caring, dedicated, and enthusiastic respite worker.
The successful applicant will be required to provide a vulnerable sector criminal reocrd check before starting this position. Training and onboarding specific to for our son’s medical needs will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Provide attentive and responsive airway management - cough assist, tracheostomy and oral suctioning, tracheostomy care, home ventilation, etc.
- Administer medication and nutrition via g-tube.
- Follow all safety protocols and healthcare guidelines relevant to children with mobility challenges.
- Assist with daily activities and routines tailored to his specific needs.
- Collaborate closely with family members and other caregivers to create a positive and supportive environment.
- Engage in activities that promote development and well-being.
- Communicate effectively with family members and other caregivers about daily care and any concerns.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities.
- Knowledge of caring for children with mobility or muscular conditions preferred.
- Compassionate, patient, and reliable personality.
- Ability to follow detailed care plans and instructions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Prior experience in medical or caregiving roles is advantageous.
- Ability to work independently while being part of a supportive team.
- Certification in first aid and CPR training.
