Cotton Inc. has been proudly servicing the Niagara Region since 1979 and we are seeking an experienced Site Servicing Pipelayer to join our team.
A Site Servicing Pipelayer is responsible for the hands-on installation, assembly, and repair of underground utility systems on residential, civil and commercial construction sites. This specialized role focuses on laying down critical infrastructure—including sanitary sewers, storm drainage systems, water mains, culverts, and catch basins—ensuring everything is built precisely to engineering blueprints and grade specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Pipe Installation & Jointing
- Assemble and position various types of underground piping.
- Connect and seal pipe segments securely using gaskets, couplings, clamps, glue, or cement to maintain watertight systems.
- Bench and purge manholes, set up sewer bypasses, and install catch basins or pre-cast concrete structures.
Trenching, Grading, & Laser Setup
- Set up pipe lasers, transit levels, and grade rods to ensure precise slope and alignment for proper gravity-fed fluid flow.
- Prepare and fine-grade trench bedding materials (e.g., gravel or sand) by hand or using tamping machines to create a secure base.
- Backfill and compact trenches in designated layers post-installation to protect utilities and prevent ground settlement.
Crew Coordination & Heavy Equipment Support
- Signal and direct heavy equipment operators (excavator and backhoe drivers) safely during trench excavation and pipe lowering.
- Act as a spotter to visually locate, expose, and protect existing underground utilities using hand tools to prevent line strikes.
Safety & Compliance
- Install trench shields, shoring systems, or trench cages to protect workers against cave-ins in compliance with occupational safety regulations.
- Work safely within confined spaces such as deep excavations, manholes, and vault structures.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 1–3 years of proven experience as a pipelayer or skilled civil utility laborer.
- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of sewer and watermain systems, grade calculations, and standard utility installation techniques.
- Blueprint Literacy: Ability to read, interpret, and cross-reference civil construction plans, engineering drawings, and stakes.
- Certifications (Preferred): Confined Space Entry, Trenching & Shoring Safety, and First Aid/CPR.
- Physical Fitness: High physical stamina with the ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), bend repeatedly, and work in deep trenches.
- License: Valid driver's license with a clean driving abstract.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Exclusively outdoors on active construction sites, requiring work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, mud).
- Hazards: Daily work around heavy moving machinery, inside deep open excavations, and within confined spaces.
