Working Around Live Utilities A significant portion of this work involves existing infrastructure. Applicants must be comfortable working around and helping safely expose:
- Live gas lines
- Water services
- Sanitary systems
- Storm systems
- Hydro
- Telecommunications
- Other shallow utilities
You must understand that working around live infrastructure requires patience, communication and precision. Production is important, but protecting existing utilities and personnel takes priority.
What We Are Looking For
We want a pipelayer who understands the entire underground operation — not someone who simply waits in the trench for pipe.
You should be able to look at the drawings, understand what is being built or repaired, establish the required elevation, communicate with the excavator operator, prepare the trench, install the pipe and ensure the work is properly backfilled and compacted.
A strong candidate should be able to work with:
Civil drawings + deficiency information + a foreman + an excavator/operator
…and efficiently execute the work in the field.
You should be able to anticipate what the operator and crew need next and help keep production moving.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3+ years of underground civil pipelaying experience preferred.
- Solid sanitary, storm and water experience.
- Experience with existing utility repairs strongly preferred.
- Ability to read civil drawings and elevations.
- Experience using pipe and grade lasers.
- Knowledge of proper pipe bedding and compaction procedures.
- Experience safely working around live utilities.
- Knowledge of safe rigging procedures.

- Shovelling and grading bedding material.
- Operating compactors and small equipment.
- Climbing in and out of trenches safely.
- Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Lifting approximately 50 lbs when required.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is an experienced civil pipelayer who takes pride in clean, accurate underground work. You understand that a few millimetres of grade, proper bedding, a clean connection and correct compaction matter.
You communicate well with operators, think ahead, recognize problems before they become expensive deficiencies and take ownership of the quality of your work.
