Canadian Swine Academy is recruiting on behalf of Schlegelhome Farms, a family-owned agricultural business, located near Shakespeare, Ontario. We are looking for a Farrowing Technician to join the team.
Job Duties
- Be responsible for daily chores, i.e. feeding, watering, animal health check, sweeping, scraping, and monitoring of barn temperature/ventilation
- Administer medication for treatment and prevention of disease and for unhealthy swine
- Monitor and assist sows in the farrowing process.
- Perform piglet day 1 procedures (drying pigs, split suckling, cross fostering, etc.)
- Monitor and ensure newborns receive colostrum
- Maintain comfortable environments for both sow and litter, adjusting heat lamps daily to maintain zone environment.
- Perform piglet processing duties such as, tattooing, tail clipping, castration, rupture repair procedures, and giving iron shots
- Feed sows according to stage of lactation, trying to challenge them to eat a lot
- Pre-farrow/post farrow sow movements, and shipping/receiving of animals
- Maintain flow within farrowing that capitalizes on health and maximum wean age
- Remove dead animals daily and put in pickup area without crossing biosecurity line
- Keep all animals tagged and identified.
- Communicate with supervisor about and issues i.e. sow flow, culls, maintenance, health, and any team projects
- Cooperate with weekend and holiday schedules and as needed
- Assist in training of co-workers
- Assist with team projects or any other reasonable duty that may be requested by supervisor or as needed
- Cleaning facilities and power washing (prepare rooms, wash, and set up)
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on building and equipment
- Work as necessary on team projects and to finish duties daily as a team unit
- Work efficiently to maintain work schedule. Working until all work is done for the day
- Keeping detailed, timely and accurate records
- Understand and follow bio-Security protocols
Requirements for Application: Desire to keep the animals and the barn in excellent condition
Able to work in a rapid-paced environment
Able to read, write and speak English
Ability to commute to work site
Ideal Candidate
- Experience working with livestock
- Flexible availability – weekend work is required
- Self-motivated
Compensation:
- $20-$26 per hour depending on experience
